Best Skate Shoes Reviewed and Rated
The new skate shoes from Vans are really worth talking about, especially the Atwood (Chambray) series. If you’re interested in skating, Vans still produces the best shoes to match the act. The Atwood series shoes are heavy enough to grip the skateboard but not too heavy to impede walking. They have a sturdy feel that lets you know they’ll last a while.
Our Top 3 Picks
1. Vans Men's Atwood (Chambray)
Vans shoes in the past have been known to rip pretty quickly, but the Atwood series keeps going with every kickflip. The boards of these shoes are flexible yet can grab onto anything they need to. They break in easily and feel comfortable after only a day or two. The insoles have the same sturdiness and durability as the rest of the shoe, so you’ll feel every step with this pair of shoes.
The padding around the ankles is intended to make the shoes comfortable even when you’re pulling the most difficult tricks on your skateboard. This shoe’s padding has been designed to be bulkier than those of earlier eras, which makes for a comfier ride on the skateboard.
The insoles are the right amount of thickness for any other extreme movement you might get into as well; this is a comfortable pair of shoes that will protect all areas of your feet. The grip on this edition of Vans is notably strong, and you’ll notice how well it attaches to the texture of a skateboard.
2. DC Men's Pure Action Sport Sneaker
For starters, the shoe looks downright fantastic. The classic look of a skater shoe is most definitely hear, but DC's wide array of color options keep things extremely interesting. While you can choose standard Black or White if that's your preference, DC cooked up some pretty great color combos to make sure that you can have your feet looking as stylish as your beloved board. With nearly endless combinations of various trim, accent, and main colors, you're bound to find something here that fits your own personal taste.
Looks are great, but when it comes to skater shoes, the practicality of using them with your skateboard is equally or even more important. Thankfully, DC is not just a pro at making their shoes look good, but they also know how to make them extremely practical and comfortable when used with your board. The abrasion resistant rubber outsole found on the Pure Action Sport Sneaker helps to absorb any direct impacts your shoe may face while skating or jumping off your board. Additionally, the mesh lining, wrap cup construction, and foam padded tongue and collar all create for extreme support and comfort for your foot. And while you're walking around and zipping through downtown on your skateboard, DC's Pure Action Sports are know to hold up incredibly well against even the most rigorous of use.
While DC may have a winner on their hands, you can end up paying a bit of a high price for this particular brand of skate shoes. All of this is based on your shoe size and color selection, so when looking any these DCs, expect to pay anywhere in the middle when you finally find that perfect shoe for you.
3. DC Men's Villain TX
DC's Villain TX features a slip-on design with visible stitching at the moccasin toe and a DC logo tag that is found at the entry of the shoe. It's quite unlike most other skate shoes you'll find, but its unique design creates for one of the strongest selling points for this shoe. Along with its unique and interesting design choice, the Villain TX also features a rubber sole, padded collar, textile construction, and an ultra-comfortable insole to keep your feet at maximum comfort levels. If you're interested, DC's Men's Villain TX have an amazingly affordable price - making it one of the best value options on our list.
4. DC Men's Cole Signature Shoe
DC's Men's Cole Signature Shoe blends a perfect marriage between comfy/safe skating shoes, nice color options, and a classy design that could be acceptable in certain work or business settings. The stitching found along the shoes is very smooth, the gum sole makes sure to be clean with no bumps or ridges. Combine this with color selections that have a great variety of color and professional appearances, and we're looking at one of the classiest skater shoes you'll probably ever find.
As if the great design wasn't enough, the Signature Shoe also stays true to its roots as being excellent for skating - this is a skate shoe after all! The leather and textile materials, rubber sole, clean toe, pill pattern tread, and flexible cup sole all come together to create for a shoe that's just as functional on a board as it is during a boardroom meeting. It's quite rare that we see a shoe that combines these two things together so nicely, making the Cole Signature Shoe by DC even more special than many of its counterparts. This is not a shoe for the most serious and die hard skater, but rather a shoe for those looking to have the convenience of owning a shoe that can be practical both in the office and on their skateboard. If this sounds like something that is right up your alley, you can expect to pay a fair price for the DC Men's Cole Signature Shoe.
5. DC Men's Stag Sneaker
DC's Men's Stag Sneaker is another skate shoe that prizes practicality and functionality above all else. While there are plenty of features here to keep your feet safe, the big seller is easily the mesh underlays and mesh collar that creates for extreme breathability within your shoe. This means that, even on the hottest of days, your feet will stay cool and comfortable while walking or riding wherever you may be headed. Along with the breathability features, the Stag Sneakers also tout action leather and nubuck in the upper area of the shoe to allow for durability and resistance against abrasion. And to top things off, there is also DC's classic Pill Pattern tread found on the rubber sole that enables the show to last for a rather long time, as well as fantastic traction when you're skating on your favorite board.
As we see with many of these skating shoes that position their main focus on durability and practical features, the design here is nothing that we haven't seen before. The overall shape of the shoe is a bit on the bigger side with all of the features that are going on inside of it, and the choices for colors aren't the widest that we've ever seen either. However, while the primary colors are either black or white, we do need to give DC credit for trying to add in as many accent colors as possible while still keeping the design relatively subdued. If you favor skate shoes that are a bit less flashy but still fashionable, these should serve your needs just fine.
While the breathable materials used in the DC Stag Sneaker is its biggest selling point, one of our favorite features has got to be the price. You get the breathable material, action leather and nubuck construction, Pill Pattern tread, and subdued, yet stylish design all for an affordable price. That's quite a bit less when compared to the Globe Sabre Skate Shoe, and if DC is a brad that you know and love, this might be the perfection skater shoe if you're shopping around for something that will keep you feet safe, comfortable, and (of course), cool.
6. Etnies Men's Jameson 2 Eco
In regards to the safety features found here, the Jameson 2 Eco is home to a rubber sole, padded collar, and a faux-vulc cupsole construction with a thinly padded tongue that creates for excellent protection and additional levels of comfort. On top of this, the included sti foam lite level 1 footbed allows your foot to have a nice, comfy place to rest when your skating, walking, or simply sitting down and relaxing.
All of this stuff is great, but there's one thing that the Jameson 2 Eco brings to the table that the other shoes on our list don't. As you can probably tell by the name, the Jameson 2 Eco must have something to do with nature - as suggested by the "Eco" in its name. If you guessed this, then you are absolutely correct! The Jameson 2 Eco's rubber outsole is made out of recycled rubber, and the pet shoe laces are created using recycled plastic. It's all part of Etnies' "Buy a shoe, plant a tree reforestation program", and that's something we feel like everyone can get behind. Helping restore our wildlife and getting new skate shoes are both awesome things, and buying a pair of Etnies' Jameson 2 Eco shoes will allow you to do just that.
What makes this deal even sweeter is the price. These shoes are quite a bit cheaper than the last two shoes we've looked at, and along with looking great and protecting your feet, this one even enables you to help save the environment! It's worth noting that, based on the color that you choose, the price of the shoe can nearly double in some cases. While this holds true for most all of the shoes we look at, the price jumps based on color choices seem to be even more harsh here than they are with other brands. Again, not something that's entirely uncommon, but also something that we feel is worth pointing out.
7. Globe Men's Sabre
Although their name may not carry quite as much weight as DC's, their's no doubt that Globe knows what it's doing when it comes to creating excellent skating shoes. As we mentioned above, the main focal point for the Sabre is how this thing actual works as a, well, skate shoe. The Sabre is an incredibly heavy duty shoe that features a step in sock liner to help achieve maximum precision and comfort when wearing the shoe. Other main selling points include generous cushioning in the collar and tongue, wraparound bumper sole, and an airbag heel. All of these come together to form a shoe that has the main goal of keeping your feet as safe and comfortable as it possibly can.
With all of that focus on its functionality though, the actual design and color options took a bit of a backseat here. Don't get us wrong, Globe's Sabre Skate Shoe isn't a bad-looking shoe by any means. It's design is just a bit chunkier when compared to other shoes out there, but that chunkiness comes with good reason as we've already mentioned all of the safety features that are included here. As for color options, the Sabre comes in a few different choices, but most of them are black with subtle color accents here and there. It's not the worst design or smallest amount of color options you can find, but it is lacking when compared to something like the DC model above.
If Globe's Sabre still sounds like something you are interested in, you can expect to pay a little bit more. While the prices can get a bit steep, this is a shoe for the most serious skaters out there. It's a shoe for those who value safety and comfort above all other things. And for that person, the Sabre makes for an excellent pick.
8. Osiris Men's NYC 83
We understand that the name is a mouthful to say the least, so let us break down just what it is that this skate shoe has to bring to the table. For starters, it's packed to the brim when it comes to features that create for safer and more comfortable skating. The shoes are home to a lightweight padding in the lounge and collar that allow for great comfort and support for your feet. Additionally, the shoes also provide resistance against abrasion and feature a rubber outsole that takes the brunt of any wear you might encounter - furthering the shoe's durability and performance.
There's no doubt that Osiris NYC 83 has all of the skater-focused features you would come to expect in a popular skate shoe, but another area where this shoe also excels comes with its design. Osiris has a very unique design language with their shoes that you simply can't get with a pair from DC or any other shoe manufacturer out there. The NYC 83 uses a combination of leather and textile for the materials used to makeup the shoe, and the unique design allows for a great combination of colors that look absolutely stunning. The different patters and color choices used here allow you to go for something a bit more laid back, or the flashiest that you can think of. There's truly something here for everyone, and the color choices used are all extremely fun picks.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, don't be surprised when you have to pay a bit more than the past few shoes we've looked at.
These shoes come at a higher price. However, you do get exceptional quality, a stunning design, and excellent features for the price. The term "you get what you pay for" is very alive in this case.
9. Women's Vans Unisex Authentic Sneaker
Over the decades, Vans has developed virtually every color, style and pattern for the canvas uppers and even allows for customization. Another excellent thing about these shoes is their price; they have already hugged the lower end of shoe prices. And when they’re sale they’re practically a steal.
And for the price, they are remarkably comfortable and designed for tough physical movements. And though there is no visible padding for the tongue and ankle, there is plenty of support that these shoes are hiding to ensure that they maintain their great sleek look. Lot of skate shoes lay the padding on thick to little effect, but these shoes find the round balance of comfort and slenderness.
And like all Vans shoes, the Authentics can withstand an incredible amount of movement and beating. Whether its from your skateboard or constant daily use, these shoes will keep their shape way longer than what you might expect from other skate companies. Their double stitched toe and heel guarantee that you’ll get the best protection despite common use, and the soles of these shoes will always provide a reliable grip for your needs.
And the waffle soles have become iconic because of their design as well as their effectiveness. These are just some of the reasons why they have been listed as some of the options for 2016.
10. DC Men's Spartan High WC
As we mentioned above, this is a skate shoe whose profile is very much that of a high top. The shaft for the Spartan measures in at around 4.5" from the arch, and the high top nature of the shoe creates for a perforated toe box that provides excellent ventilation throughout the entire shoe, meaning that your toes and feet should stay nice and cool even on the hottest of skating days when the sun is burning down on you while you're pulling of even the most impressive and difficult of tricks. There's also an abrasion-resistant rubber outsole with DC's classic Pill Pattern treads that enable the Spartan High WC to have some of the absolute best traction you'll find on the market.
As for the color options that are available here, you're looking at some of the best you'll find when it comes to a skate shoe with a high top design. The primary colors range from black, grey, and white, but the leather designs used on the shoe allow for accent colors to really pop. Whether you're looking for something with just a splash of color, or a shoe that's a bit brighter with its color pallet, you're bound to find something here that meets your taste in design and color choices. And for the cherry on top, DC's Spartan High WC doesn't break the bank either! Even at the most expensive price, the Spartan High WC is still one of the most affordable options on our list. And when you consider that you're getting both a great design, awesome color variants, and top of the line features for keeping you safe and comfy while skating, DC's Men's Spartan High WC turn into an absolute steal.
