When it comes to comfort, this design has a padded footbed for extra cushioning and those long-distance walks through the city, and the outsole is made out of rubber, for much-needed slip and skid resistance. 4. Naturalizer Janelle

17 Inch Circumference
N5 Comfort Technology
Sole Wears Out Quickly
A classic silhouette that is a must-have come winter season, the Naturalizer Jenelle is that design you will turn to when it gets cold and the weather calls for something protective and yet chic at the same time. This riding boot will seamlessly fit into your wardrobe and become your favorite in a matter of days, not least because of its stylish appearance.Read more
The Naturalizer Jenelle is made out of genuine leather, with an opening of 17 inches in circumference; not the widest of designs on our list, but still comfortable for most calves. It has buckle detailing across the instep and at the top, and comes with a synthetic outsole.
In terms of adjustability, the closure offers none, as it is a simple zipper in the inner side of the design. However, there are elastic panels at the top, which offer a stretchy fit and much needed breathing room.
What sets the Jenelle apart from other items on this list is Naturalizer’s signature comfort system by the name of N5. N5 provides extra cushioning which absorbs impact and supports your body weight, breathable lining, a balanced gait, pressure-relieving soles and lightweight but durable materials. It is truly everything you will ever need to feel comfortable all day long.
It is hard not to fall in love with the Naturalizer Janelle. This design is easy to combine with countless outfits, has an elastic fit that we all need, and also comes with a superior comfort technology that we simply can’t get enough of. What a great deal!
5. G by Guess Harvest
17 Inch Circumference
Long Gore Panels
Tight Across the Instep
From a world-famous brand comes a collection titled G by Guess, aimed at a younger audience, at more affordable prices than its mother line, Guess. G by Guess creates only the freshest looks and the hottest styles, and the Harvest design is definitely one of them. If you are all about that fashion forward but slightly edgy aesthetic, then this option is perfect for you.Read more
The Harvest is entirely man-made - from the upper to the insole and lining to the outsole. It has a round-toe silhouette for comfy toe-wiggling, as well as the barest hint of a heel at 1.25 inches. What is interesting about this design are the buckle decorations. They are just that - decorations, as they don’t actually have the function of adjusting anything. Nevertheless, they add a certain hardness to the design, making it look a lot more grunge.
In terms of fit and adjustability, there are two gore panels in the back of the Harvest, which go from the top all the way to the foot and offer a stretchy fit throughout the entire length. There is also a zipper closure in the inner side, for ease of access.
We also love that this design comes in two other color options, aside from this brown one - the black and the grey.
In the first paragraph we mentioned how the G by Guess designs come at affordable price points, and the same is true for the Harvest as well. This is a stylish, bold option that will add a little punk flair to your wardrobe, while not taking too much away from your wallet. What more could we possibly ask for?
6. Ugg Bailey Bow
18 Inch Opening

It is a great option for everyday winter wear, and you will love every second you spend in these world-famous boots!
7. Easy Spirit Bionti
Asymmetric Trendy Upper
Long Stretch Inserts
17 Inch Circumference
Thick Blocky Heel
Easy Spirit is a brand which encourages you to move. No matter how old you are, how busy or how unwilling to exercise, the goal of Easy Spirit footwear is to encourage you to walk, run, jump and otherwise make the most out of your days! While the Bionti doesn’t come with a standard sporty design this brand is known for, it is still an option that will definitely motivate you to be the most fashionable person in any given situation.Read more
This design is made entirely out of synthetic materials. The upper comes with a stylish asymmetry in the opening, with the front higher than the back for added style. There is an insert of stretch fabric in both sides of the Bionti but done in such a way that you can’t help but admire the artistic lines of it. These stretch inserts provide good accommodation and an easy fit.
As with most designs in this list, there is a zipper in the side of the Bionti to allow you to easily slide it on and take it off, as well as a fabric-wrapped heel. The heel is about two and a half inches high, but it is also square in shape, allowing for secure, steady steps. There is also a rubber outsole on the bottom, to ensure that you don’t slip or skid across any type of surface.
In terms of style, the Bionti definitely falls in the category of more trendy designs. It is sophisticated and poised while being comfortable and easy to walk in at the same time. Other than this taupe color, there is also the choice between black and wine red, so that you can find a version of this design for any outfit you think of!
8. Fergalicious Lexis
Stretchy Gore Panel
Chunky Two Inch Heel
Narrow Foot Area
With a suave, western style, the Fergalicious Lexis is one chunky boot that doesn’t mess around. It is a design which simply radiates confidence and strength, and which will make you the center of attention at any given event.Read more
The Lexis comes with a synthetic, faux leather upper, a round toe silhouette that is comfortable to wiggle your toes in, and faux leather straps around the ankle for a touch of edgy chic. In terms of width, it is unfortunately at the bottom of our list, as its opening is only 16 inches in circumference. This still belongs in the wide category, but it may not be suitable for everyone.
The chunky heel in the back is really what completes this look. The Fergalicious Lexis comes with a two-inch blocky heel which is low enough to provide all-day wearability but also has a wide base for stable, secure walking.
For an easy way in and out of the design, there is a zipper in the side, as well as a stretchy panel at the top to offer some elasticity.
Honestly, we can’t take our eyes off of the Fergalicious Lexis, as it is one of the most stylish options in this guide. It is fierce and yet casual, sexy but practical at the same time. Its heel is comfortable, its insole provides cushioning and its outsole has good traction. A design that everyone will love!
9. Journee Collection Riding Boot
Faux Leather Upper
19 Inch Circumference
Buckles and Studs
Zipper in the Back
Zipper Breaks Easily
Being the widest option on our list, the Journee Collection Riding Boot certainly doesn’t pull any punches. With a whopping 19 inches in the opening, this design puts all other products to shame. It is not only comfortably fitting for most calf sizes, but it is also stylish and a little pirate-esque, which we feel is not a bad thing to be when it comes to this type of footwear.Read more
This Journee Collection design is made out of faux leather. And while this means that it is not as durable as some of the genuine options in this guide, it also means that it is inexpensive. For a quite affordable price you can treat yourself to a brand new pair of extra wide footwear.
Not only that, but this design comes with lovely detailing in the form of buckles across the foot and at the top, as well as edgy metal studs along the zipper in the back. The zipper closure allows you to easily slide in and out of the design, and a buckle which goes across it prevents the zipper from coming undone by itself.
When it comes to material quality and special technologies, this Journee Collection option doesn’t stand out much. However, it is accommodating to most leg shapes, and it is arguably one of the least expensive designs we have come across. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money on a new pair of shoes that will still meet your needs, then this is definitely the one to go for.
10. Brinley Co. Mid-Calf
18 Inch Circumference
Plush Faux Suede Upper
Thick Two Inch Heel
Braided Tassel Zipper Detail
Many Color Choices
What plush magnificence. The Brinley Co. Mid-Calf design is a study in refinement, from its elegant lines and luxurious finish to a stacked block heel in the back for an attractive boost in height. This option is meant both for a casual outing, such as a fun lunch date with friends and even for a more sophisticated one, such as an important office meeting.Read more
While it may look like genuine suede, the Brinley Co. Mid-Calf is in fact made out of fabric, or faux suede. Despite that, it is still just as soft and just as gentle to the touch, and it comes with an opening of 18 inches in circumference. This design comes in various different colors, including the traditional black and this brown, as well as stone, taupe and grey options.
As a closure, there is a zipper on the outer side which goes all the way up. On the zipper is a tassel-like braided detail which adds some interest to the design, and brings cowboy flair into the elegance. There is also a thick heel of about two inches in height which provides a steady base for your footsteps.
Overall, this streamlined design is a solid choice. Its downsides are that its materials are not outstanding - however, not expensive at the same time - and that it lacks any type of adjustability or elasticity to it. However, if you are confident that you will be able to wear this beauty, there is not a single soul out there who wouldn’t compliment your lovely new plush boots.
Criteria Used for Evaluation
What exactly is an extra vast shaft? How is it different than a simple wide shaft boot?
Well, different footwear brands have different categories when it comes to sizing, both in relation to feet and in relation to calves. But most of them agree on this:
Extra vast options are those which have the opening of their shaft anywhere from 17 to 21 inches in circumference. This varies depending on the size of the foot part, as well as the materials the design is made of - if it has large stretch panels in it, even a model with 16 inches in circumference will be able to accommodate a vast calf. But if you’re finding that you have trouble fitting into vast calf options, then you may need to look up extra vast ones.
And here’s how to correctly measure the circumference of your calf:
- Use a tape measure, and loosely wrap it around the largest part of your calf. When we say loosely, we don’t mean that it should be slipping, but also not so tight that it is digging into your skin. The inches that you measure here are your calf width.
- Measure both calves. In case one is thicker than the other - which is normal, and it happens all the time; no two legs are built the same, even on one person - then use the larger number as your calf width.
- Lastly, if you are petite in height, under 5’ 4” tall, it would be best to add a bonus 1.5 - 2 inches to your calf width measurement. The reason for this is that boots are usually made for people who are average in height, say anywhere from 5’ 6” and up, and the largest parts of their calves fall differently in the design of the boot (at the opening). Someone who is shorter than that has their largest part of the calf fall several inches lower, where the design is not yet vast enough to accommodate that.
Finally, make sure not to order designs which have openings the exact same number of inches as your calf width. You still need to be able to move in your footwear, to sit and to stand and to zip it up comfortably, so it is recommended to go up at least an inch when you’re looking for the right size for you.
If you are having problems with regular sizes and need some extra space for your calves, any type of adjustability in the design is more than welcome. Even when it comes to extra vast options - the adjustability will give you some room to breathe, will make you feel comfortable in your footwear, and won’t prevent you from moving freely, from sitting, standing, walking, running or anything else you wish to do.
This adjustability comes in many different shapes and forms, and we’re going to talk about some of them here.
Arguably the option with the most adjustability available, laces are always a great feature. They usually run from somewhere at the middle of the instep all the way up to the top of the design, be it a low-top sneaker or a knee-high boot. This allows you to customize the fit to however tight, or loose, as you’d like it to be along practically the entire length of your shoe. You can give yourself a little bit of wiggle room by loosening the laces, or you can prevent your foot - or even leg - from sliding around the design by tightening them up.
Buckles are a feature often found in boots. The reason for this is that they come with a hardware detail that suits the edgy design, and it’s much more convenient to place buckle straps around a boot that build laces into it.
Buckles are not as good when it comes to adjusting, however, as they come with an already preset number of holes. But they are handy when you need to feel more secure inside your footwear, or when you want to have more ‘give’. Another good thing about straps, in general, is that they can be placed across zipper closures, such as in the Journee Collection design from our list, and thus prevent the zipper from coming undone on its own.
There is very little difference between buckles and velcro, as they both represent a type of closure at the end of a strap. Velcro possibly offer a bit more adjustability since it can technically be fastened at any length and isn’t limited by a number of holes.
However, velcro closures are also less reliable. They can easily break off or lose their adhering power, and then you’d be stuck with a design that you can’t even fasten up properly. In comparison, buckles are far more durable.
- Gore Panels:
Finally, we arrive at the feature which is abundant in this guide - the gore panels. These represent inserts of elastic materials in the upper of the design, in various shapes and sizes. It can be a tiny insert at the top of the shaft, such as in the Fergalicious Lexis, or it can be an entire side or the back of the design, like in the Easy Spirit Bionti and the Vince Camuto Paton.
These do not offer adjustability per se, in the sense that you’re not the one in charge of it. Rather, these elastic inserts help the design itself adjust to the shape of your leg, to stretch out a little bit more if needed to provide you with an extra dose of comfort. The moment you take off your footwear, these materials fall right back to their original shape, ready to accommodate you once more next time.
Of course that a design doesn’t have to have only one of these fit-adjusting features at a time. A model can come with a buckle strap and a gore insert, which makes it all the more favorable to wear. Which one you go for in the end depends entirely on you and your calf size, as well as the width of the opening of the design. If you’re dubious about the accuracy of the brand’s sizing and think that it might be somewhat off, then definitely look for an option which has more adjustability to it than usual.
Another thing that is vital in picking out the best footwear for yourself is its comfort. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a casual design, one that you can wear day in and day out in, or if you’re interested in something fancier, that is reserved for special occasions and when you want to look more put-together. Everyone wants to be comfortable when they’re on their feet, no matter where they’re going.
While it would be ideal if you could try the design on first, before you purchase it, even without that there are several ways you can determine if it is worth investing in or if it will merely be a source of constant pain.
Some of the designs in our list come with special comfort systems created specifically by their brands. Take the example of the Naturalizer Jenelle, which comes with the famous Naturalizer N5 technology, with so many benefits that it will make your mind spin. Similar could be said for Dr. Scholl’s Poe, which comes with a unique insole from the same brand.
While these technologies are certainly an advantage, bear in mind that simply because a design has a comfort system developed in a lab, doesn’t necessarily mean it is in any way better than the other options. It all comes down to your own preferences, to the shape of your feet, and to what you perceive as comfortable. A comfort technology is a bonus, but not a deal breaker. Plenty of footwear comes without an advanced feature like that, and it is just as comfortable.
If a design you like doesn’t come with a brand-specific comfort system, then you can look for some other features which might make it more comfortable - such as a molded footbed. A molded, or contoured footbed, is a good thing, as long as it fits the shape of your foot sole. There are hills under your arch and valleys under your toes, and with a molded footbed your foot feels gently cradled and supported inside the design.
If the said footbed provides good arch support at the same time - even better! Arch support is essential in reducing foot fatigue, enabling you to stay on your feet for longer periods of time, and for preventing medical conditions such as flatfoot.
While we will discuss materials more in detail in a later section, here we will mention this important feature in terms of comfort. The material a design is made of should be durable and breathable, but it should also be soft around your foot, gently hugging it instead of causing chafing, pinching, blisters or worse. It should also be malleable enough that you don’t need a long break-in period to feel comfortable in your new shoes.
Perfect choices for material would be genuine leather and suede, as they have the ability to soften over time and take the shape of your feet and legs, thus providing you with an addictive, customized comfort.
Lastly, as there are a couple of heeled items in our guide, we have to discuss how this affects the comfort of a design. Heels, in general, are not comfortable to wear, especially if they are higher, say four inches or above, and if they are stiletto in shape.
Fortunately, only the fanciest of options come with a stiletto heel, as for an everyday walk around the block - especially if in snow or rain - they’re not very practical. An alternative that is far more comfortable is heels that are thick and blocky in shape, as well as wedge designs. These provide a good base for your footsteps and reduce the wobbly movements in your ankle.
As for the height, look for heels which are lower than three inches. They don’t put so much pressure on the front of your foot, as the angle between your heel and your toes is not so sharp, and you will be able to spend as much time in them as you want!
Most of the designs we have encountered in our research are for a casual, everyday type outing. They are called riding boots, as their shape and aesthetic has first been introduced for horseback riding, made out of only the finest leathers for royalty and high society to enjoy in their little adventures around the estates.
These riding designs are tall enough so that the leg is protected from getting pinched by the leathers of the saddle, and they also have a distinct heel to prevent the foot from sliding out of the stirrup.
Of course, you don’t actually have to go horseback riding to enjoy this type of footwear. The designs we looked at all have a timeless silhouette that never goes out of style. Regardless of if you’re going to work, to a shopping trip at the local mall, are picking up your kids from school or having a dinner date with your friends - this type of design will always make you look good. It goes well with any type of outfit - be it skinny jeans or tights or snazzy winter skirts - and it is something that everyone needs in their wardrobe.
Apart from these regular, must-have staple pieces, in our list, we also have a couple of options which are fancier in style. These come with higher heels, such as the Dr. Sholl’s Poe and the Fergalicious Lexis, and are maybe a little more suitable for an outfit that is more refined, more sophisticated than a simple pair of jeans and a fluffy sweater.
They still all belong in the casual group, however, and shouldn’t be considered for formal, or even semi-formal events.
As always when it comes to style, it all boils down to personal aesthetics. Think about the color - whether you prefer a standard black or brown, or would like something cognac or sand colored - as well as the shape and height of the heel. Think about whether you want the material to have a smooth finish, to be plush like suede, or even slouchy in design. Each one of these is a good choice, as long as it fits your taste, makes you feel good, and encourages you to step out with confidence.
One last thing - but no less important than the others - that would be good to take into consideration when looking at new winter footwear, is its durability. How long can you expect your boots to last? One season? Longer than that? Do you have to take care of them, or is it enough to simply wipe them down with a damp cloth every once in a while?
Let’s answer all of these questions one by one.
The durability of a design largely depends on the way it is constructed, and the materials that go into it. A shoe can be glued together, sewn together and even welded, and all of these methods bring their own set of pros and cons. Generally speaking, those designs which are sewn through are far more durable than those which are held together by glue.
Materials that are the best when it comes to durability are the ones which we already briefly mentioned - leather and suede. These are natural materials which can last even decades if treated right. Leather needs a bit of care, in the form of regular cleaning and conditioning, though none of that requires too much effort. Not when you know that in return you’re getting a design which will keep you company winter after winter.
Less durable are synthetic materials, faux leather, and faux suede. They may look like the real deal, but they won’t last longer than a couple of seasons at most before you start seeing significant signs of wear - creases, tears and maybe even holes in the design. However, with this decreased longevity also comes a decrease in price, as synthetic designs are far less expensive than genuine leather ones. We also have to mention how synthetic materials are animal-friendly and are the default choice if you are looking for vegan footwear.
If you don’t mind investing in a pair of shoes which need some love and care, but will last you for a long, long time to come - then genuine leather is your friend. On the other hand, if you don’t feel like spending a lot of money, and don’t mind replacing your footwear next season or the one after that, then you should go for synthetics, and make the most out of your new boots.
Expert Interviews & Opinions
The best way to ensure that boots will work for your wide calves is to look at the backing. Many options come with a stretchy back panel, which not only looks stylish but is also quite functional. This means they'll stretch to perfectly adjust to your body!
... Or at least they should be! Whenever you're picking out a new pair you should take into consideration where you're going to be wearing them. In the office? A chunky heel might be appropriate. Working on your feet? Then you're gonna need a low heel, or a flat one.
Other Factors to Consider
If you’re looking to buy new footwear for autumn and winter, it is natural that you expect some level of weather and water resistance from it. After all, you might be living in an area which gets freezing near the end of the year, or where rain is a constant when the summer is over.
It is important to stress here, that none of the designs on our list are actually made to withstand extreme weather conditions. They will hold up well in light - perhaps even heavy - rain and light snow, but they are not ideal for long-distance trekking through slush or for standing in deep water puddles for longer periods of time.
As we touched upon in our Durability section, the items made out of leather need cleaning and conditioning to retain their protective properties. With these treatments, they will remain as good as new even when exposed to sunshine, rain, snow, wind, salt, mud and similar. Synthetic options, in comparison, won’t be as lucky, and will probably break down much faster if used in a harsh environment.
We understand how frustrating it can be, trying to find a good pair of boots to fit your calves. We’ve been there, too. You see a design which looks good, which should maybe even fit when you see its measurements, but which is ultimately too tight, or the zipper won’t go all the way up, or you can’t sit without it pinching you badly. It is a quite discouraging feeling.
However, that is exactly why vast and extra big sizes exist! We don’t have to limit ourselves only to winter shoes and ankle-height designs anymore - now we can also have a good knee-high option in our wardrobe, and feel comfortable and free to move in it however we like!
So don’t hesitate to pick out a great new extra wide design for yourself. We hope that you found at least one that you loved in our list, and we urge you to go for it. Spend a couple of minutes thinking about its style and possible comfort levels, as well as how durable it will be and if it will fit well with what you have in your closet - but don’t overthink it too much! Treat yourself, because your feet and legs definitely deserve it.
Frequently Asked Questions
For this guide, we focused on extra vast options of regular, everyday styles, as we feel that those are the hardest to come by. Designs meant for rain - wellingtons, if you will - are usually quite vast, meant to fit most leg sizes, and are easier to find in the desired size.
There certainly are! If you spend a little time digging online, you will encounter a handful of brands which specialize in constructing vast designs, such as Wide Widths for example. They offer a large range of sizes and openings and are bound to have an option that fits you just right.
