7. Manolo Blahnik Remola
Soft Suede Upper
Real Fur Cuff
Signature Manolo Heel
Expensive and Elegant Looking
Not for Everyday Wear
Manolo Blahnik is a man who is a true sophisticate. During the 1970s, he struggled with the chunky heels and wedges that were popular at that time, finding them inelegant, and instead, he insisted on perfecting the stiletto, giving it a sculptured, sensual line which is easily recognizable as the Manolo heel. With that, we introduce the Remola ankle bootie, one that simply radiates grace, wealth, and aristocracy.Read more
The Remola has a genuine suede upper in a rich navy blue color. The trim around the cuff is part dyed rabbit fur (from China), and part dyed fox fur (from Finland). It is effortlessly luxurious, so easy to fall in love with at first sight thanks to its plush finish and pointy toe front.
There is a zipper in the inner side of the Remola, and the heel is covered with the same soft suede as the upper. It is almost three inches high (2.8, to be exact), with that unmistakable Manolo curve to it, with a wider bottom to provide a bit more stability. The outsole is made out of smooth, comfortable leather.
We are tempted to launch into a lengthy monologue about how much we adore this design, but for the sake of brevity, we will keep it short and sweet. The Manolo Blahnik Remola is all you will ever need to exude class and poise, the final touch to your outfit that will absolutely knock everyone off their feet.
8. Gucci Kesha
Soft Suede Upper
Comfortable Round Toe
Three Inch Chunky Heel
Leather Insole and Outsole
Accent Wide Buckle
Founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Gucci is a luxury fashion label which has achieved the status of a powerhouse. Today, this is the highest-selling Italian brand, one that is not afraid of eccentricity, bold colors and prints, and over-the-top designs. However, today we have something a little more subdued, an elegantly simple suede knee-high boot that is appropriate for both the office and a cute date night out.Read more
The Gucci Kesha is made from genuine suede for a soft appearance, with an upper and a shaft which gently hug your foot and leg. It comes with a wide buckle accent at the side to bring some classic interest to this minimalistic design. The curious thing about the Kesha is that it comes in two versions - this knee-high one, and an ankle-high version, which are very similar in appearance and construction.
The heel of this Kesha is three inches high, square and solid, providing stability with each step. The inside is lined with leather for a healthy, comfortable and well-ventilated experience, and there is also a leather outsole of the highest quality, to add to the elegance and comfort aspects of the design.
The Gucci Kesha is a subtle option that you can wear everyday, for any occasion - a business meeting, a shopping trip with friends, a dinner party with the family - and look effortlessly stylish. It pairs well with any outfit and helps you show off a classier, more sophisticated side of yourself.
9. Balenciaga BB
Wool and Stretch Upper
Low Three Inch Heel
Tight Toe Area
This luxury fashion house was founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga, a designer hailing from Spain. He had a reputation of a couturier, with a hard, uncompromising work ethic and criteria, who Christian Dior once referred to as “the master of us all”. The Balenciaga BB bootie is an option which proudly displays the brand logo at the front, making it crystal clear for everyone around you where the design comes from. It is posh, it is classic, and it will add an entirely new dimension to your formal looks.Read more
The BB is made from textile for the upper, with a houndstooth pattern. The textile is made from a combination of wool, polyamide, elastane and other fibers, which provide insulation and moisture-wicking (wool), and a touch of stretchiness (elastane). The BB has an extremely pointed toe that is not for the weak of heart, and the BB logo on the front is gleaming in gold to draw everyone’s attention.
A zipper closure in the inner side allows you to easily put this shoe on and take it off, and the heel covered in the same pattern as the upper is about 3 inches in height. It is stiletto, so it may not be the most stable, but it is low enough to not cause any discomfort. The inside of the BB is lined with leather to provide a healthy foot climate, and there is also a leather outsole on the bottom.
One thing is for sure - you won’t find a design like this from any other brand. It is partially because of the BB logo, and partially because there is no aesthetic that is as clean, and as regal as Balenciaga. Prepare to be a fierce queen in these sharp booties!
10. Fendi Cowboy Boot
Calf Leather and Cotton
Two Pull Tabs
Low Angular Heel
Fendi FF Logo Print
Narrow Toe Area
Fendi is a fashion brand renowned for its original use of fur and fur accessories, as well as leather goods. A key name in this company is Karl Lagerfeld, a creative director who is the cornerstone of many other labels as well, such as Chanel, H&M, Chloe and similar. Western styles, such as cowboy boots are all the rage this season, and Fendi certainly isn’t falling behind with this refreshingly original take on a well-known aesthetic.Read more
This Fendi shoe is ankle high, made out of calf leather, leather and cotton blend. The available color and pattern is the famous Mogano Panna, which is a name reserved for Fendi’s iconic FF print. This cowboy design comes with pull tabs at the top for easy entry and an extremely pointy toe that is often found in western designs today.
The heel of this Fendi option is 2.36 inches high, with a distinct angular cut and even a small cutout in the back for added interest. The outsole is made from leather, meaning that it takes on the contours of the foot sole over time for maximum comfort.
The Fendi cowboy shoe is not modest or unobtrusive by any means. It is a model to be worn when you want to impress, to draw attention, and to appear both cool and expensive at the same time. The FF logo is hard to miss, and you can be sure that everyone you run into will envy you for these extravagant cowboy shoes.
Criteria Used for Evaluation
It is without a doubt that the brands we talk about here represent pure, distilled style. This is what they’re all about, anyway; not only following the latest fashion trends - these fashion leaders don’t really care about what’s hot right now. No, they are at the front lines of style, looking ahead, into the future, and they are the ones who call the shots; who determine what comes next, what’s going to be the next craze, what will define the next year’s fashion shows.
Brands like these take their purpose in fashion very seriously. They find a great way to mix classic with modern, traditional with innovative, and to blow our minds season after season.
In a way, we can divide all of the designs from this guide into two groups, style wise: the Standard, and the Unexpected.
The standard items are those such as the Common Projects Chelsea boot, the Saint Laurent Wyatt, the Gucci Kesha. They are of high-quality, impeccable craftsmanship and elegant silhouettes, but at the same time, there isn’t anything inherently new about them. These are all designs that we have seen before, from less expensive brands, that we have perhaps even worn before, and that we love because there is comfort and security in timeless pieces.
It doesn’t mean that these styles are in any way bad, or inferior. If you are looking for something versatile and reliable, these are definitely the right way to go. However, if you wish for something spicier, to refresh your wardrobe a little bit, then maybe the unexpected is more for you.
In the Unexpected category, we find the Marc Jacobs Rocket, the Manolo Blahnik Remola, the Balenciaga BB, among others. These are bold statement pieces that will draw all eyes to you. They feature a loud print, a fluffy fur cuff, a gleaming, polished metal logo that command all the attention and make you one fierce fashionista.
These Unexpected styles are the ones you choose when you want to impress, to leave an impact. They may not be suitable for everyday wear (we can’t imagine going to the store in the Manolo Blahnik Remola), but for a dressier occasion, a dinner at a fancy restaurant or even a night out at the club, these styles are the perfect choice.
When you’re choosing a high-end shoe, you shouldn’t only be interested in its appearance. Sure, it is a big factor in making the decision - after all, all of those fashion houses are about the aesthetic - but you definitely also have to take into account the comfort level, as well. Because at the end of the day, if it isn’t comfortable, why would you wear it? How would you expect to show it off to everyone around you, if you can’t endure longer than a couple of hours in the shoe?
When it comes to comfort, these luxury brands don’t really invest in new technologies or comfort systems. They aren’t Nike or Adidas, to try to engineer something in a lab to make your walking, running or exercising experience the best it can possibly be.
Rather, the likes of Manolo Blahnik, Fendi, Gucci, Valentino and others turn to what they know best - construction, and materials. While it may sound simple, even insufficient, we assure you that this is quite enough for a shoe to be perfectly comfortable for all-day wear. After all, most of these brands have been in existence for decades, even centuries, and have had plenty of time to hone their construction techniques and perfect the art of making luxury footwear.
While none of the items in our list come with an advanced comfort feature of any kind, they all have leather uppers and soft, gentle linings on the inside. These linings are usually made from genuine leather as well, which is a material that is the best when it comes to comfort. It has the unique ability to mold to the shape of the foot over time, ensuring a personalized comfort.
Leather lining is also breathable, promoting air circulation and providing a healthy climate inside the shoe, meaning that there is no risk of developing a bacterial or fungi infection, or suffering from itchiness, redness and skin flaking that comes with that.
When it comes to the comfort of a design, you don’t need any fancy high-tech features, not even well-known comfort materials such as EVA or memory foam. Often, it is quite enough to have a shoe which has been meticulously constructed to follow the natural lines of the foot, and out of materials that are of the highest quality they can be to ensure that you are perfectly comfortable wherever you decide to go.
Speaking of materials, it is time to evaluate what these items in our guide are actually made of. Most of them, 9/10, are constructed out of genuine leather. Given the reputation of these brands and the high cost of their products, it is no wonder that they also utilize only the most expensive, highest quality materials. One of the options, the Balenciaga BB, has an upper made from textile, but its lining and outsole are also leather.
Let’s first see what the difference between leather and suede is.
Leather is tanned animal hide, or the outer layer of animal skin if you will. It usually has a smooth finish, perhaps one that is a little grainy, or maybe even polished to a high gloss.
In contrast to that, suede is the underside of that same hide, softer and more pliable than leather, and which has that plush feeling that we know all too well.
In terms of durability, breathability and comfort, there isn’t a lot of difference between these two, though there are differences in how you care for them. Leather and suede require regular cleaning and conditioning, but with using different products. Suede, in particular, is more subject to creasing and getting stained, and may require a little bit more attention than leather.
When it comes to leather, there are also two versions of that we encountered in this guide.
The first is calfskin, the more common one. Calfskin has a sheer, almost velvety texture, and it is amazingly durable in extreme conditions. It is resistant to abrasions and wear and tear, and has the ability to preserve its softness even in a tough working environment.
Lambskin, on the other hand, is not as resilient. However, lambskin is unique in the world of leather, because it is tanned with a little bit of wool still adhered to the skin. This adds warmth-preserving and protective properties to lambskin, ones that calfskin doesn’t have.
Both of these materials are obtained from young animals, which have a more flexible, thinner skin than older animals, meaning that it is consequently of higher quality.
A little less in quality is the textile upper of the Balenciaga BB, though that doesn’t mean that this design is in any way inferior. It simply means that you should maybe take a bit more care of how frequently and in what situations you wear this option, as it could fray and deteriorate faster than genuine leather.
We felt the need to include a separate section on the heel height, because this is quite an important factor when it comes to comfort and wearability. Whether you are someone who is constantly wearing high heels and wouldn’t be caught dead in flat footwear, or if you are just venturing into the world of boosted heights, there are a few things you should know before you pick out your favorite design.
Heels are mostly considered an uncomfortable style of footwear, because they put the foot in an unnatural position. By elevating the heel in relation to your toes, these shoes shift your weight to the front, adding pressure to the ball of your foot. The higher the heel is, the bigger this pressure is, and long term it can lead to a myriad of health problems, such as numbness, bunions, hammer toes, and similar. Not to mention that, if the heel is really sky-high, you wouldn’t be able to last longer than a couple of hours in it before you start feeling pain and getting cramps in your feet.
In order to have the most comfortable heel experience you can, there are a few things you can look for.
First, pay attention to the height of the heel. Anything three inches and lower is as comfortable as though you are wearing a flat shoe. You can easily walk the entire day in heels this low and not feel a thing. The trouble starts around four inches, when you can expect to start feeling the first twinges of pain. If you opt for designs as high as these, try to wear them only to events where you will be sitting down more than standing up or walking around.
The second factor in heel comfort is the shape, or thickness, of the heel. Narrow heels, like stilettos, are not so comfortable. They don’t provide enough stability and could cause your ankle to wobble, or perhaps even cause you to stumble and injure yourself. Additionally, stilettos don’t do much in alleviating pressure off of the front of your foot.
The heels which are a lifesaver are those thicker in shape, like square or round heels, or wedges. What they do is deliver a good foundation to steady your steps, and they also help with distributing your weight more evenly inside the shoe. The ball of your foot is no longer under so much strain, and you are able to stay on your feet for longer!
Of course that the visual appeal is key when it comes to heels, as they are universally acknowledged as quite a sexy footwear style. If you are willing to brave a few hours of pain to look your best, don’t let anything stop you! But just in case you wish to be comfortable as well as stylish, try picking out the right heel height and shape according to our guide.
When you’re shelling out a ton of money for a high-end design, it is only natural that you expect it to last as long as possible. So, how durable are these options, anyway? They come from famous brand names, and are worn by celebrities and fashion icons all over the world - it stands to reason they can last for quite a while, no?
Fortunately, the answer to that question is, yes, they do last for quite a while. There are several things that go into a durability of a design, out of which the most important ones are the material types and construction techniques, as well as how frequently you wear the shoe, and in what conditions.
As we have established in our Materials section, all of the options on our list are made from literally the best materials available on the market. This makes them extremely durable, especially those made from calfskin, and you can expect them to last you for years, perhaps even decades. What leather and suede demand, however, is a bit of care in the form of cleaning and conditioning every once in a while. But this is a small effort to give to get a design which you can enjoy for a long time to come, in our opinion.
When it comes to construction, you don’t have to worry about that aspect either. Luxury designer brands have been in this business for a long, long time, and they have mastered the art of putting together the finest design possible. Most of these labels emphasize the importance of handcrafting, and utilize a combination of traditional techniques and modern innovation to bring their creations to life. We guarantee that you won’t be able to find better constructed shoes anywhere else.
Lastly, just because you want your footwear to last long, doesn’t mean that you should in any way hold back from wearing it whenever you want. It is important to keep in mind that, even though the cost of these options is quite steep, you aren’t getting them so they can sit pretty in your wardrobe.
Don’t be afraid to show your shoes off, to have everyone admire you for them, and be proud of your choice! It is natural that a shoe has a limited lifespan, and sooner or later even a luxury design like this will become damaged beyond repair. Until then, you should revel in them to the maximum!
Expert Interviews & Opinions
GQ magazine's Sneaker of the Week title has been awarded to Common Projects a whole of two times!
The famous double G Gucci logo stands for the brand's founder, Guccio Gucci. Contrary to popular belief, it was not created by the man himself, but in 1960, to honor his passing.
Despite being a designer famous for his signature heel, Manolo Blahnik prefers a women in flats. He claims that a woman needs to know how to walk in flats in order to look elegant in them, something not everyone can achieve.
Other Factors to Consider
Given that the topic of this guide is designer boots, we can’t mention what boots are most commonly used for, which is weather resistance. We buy boots to keep us protected from moisture and cold, and to wear them in unfavorable conditions.
However, it is important to know that, despite these being boots, they aren’t exactly meant for the harshest of environments. Most of the items on our list are meant for dry weather, and they don’t have much in terms of insulation. They are not waterproof, and won’t keep you extra warm in freezing temperatures.
That being said, when you are shopping for a luxury design, you’re not getting it for its practicality, but for its aesthetic and the weight that its brand name carries. There are plenty of options you can choose to wear in heavy rain or snow, while there aren’t as many when it comes to prestigious products like the ones in this guide.
At the end of the day, choosing a high-end boot for yourself - or perhaps a loved one - is an exciting experience! You get to consider all the world famous fashion brands, to compare and match materials, styles, prices, to feel that pleasant anticipation before you finally decide on something that everyone will envy you on.
Keep in mind that, despite the significant brand name, all of these options are not so different than any other footwear designs you’ve come across. They still need to look good on you, to be comfortable, durable, and to fit right. Make sure to take advantage of our Criteria section, and use all of that information to get yourself the best designer boot you possibly can! Good luck!
Frequently Asked Questions
The reason for this is multifold. Firstly, these designs are made from the highest grade materials and usually handcrafted with painstaking care and attention to detail. Secondly, the brand name itself - whichever it is - commands a certain price. There is no fashionable person in the world who hasn’t heard of Prada, Chanel, Gucci or Fendi, and the effect these names have on other people costs a pretty penny.
We’re afraid that there is no one answer to this question. Each brand comes with a different aesthetic, a different point of view which they offer to the public. Fashion, like paintings, music, movies, books - like any other artform - is highly subjective. Thus, we are inclined to say that the best designer is the one you like the most, and who fits your personal taste.
During our research, all accounts that we’ve read regarding high-end brands and wide, even extra wide sizes, are inconsistent. This appears to vary from customer to customer, but the general consensus is that these types of brands are not good when it comes to wide sizes. Nothing should stop you from giving it a try, however! But we can’t guarantee that any one luxury brand is universally suitable for wide feet.
Not necessarily. Designer footwear is meant for standard feet - meaning standard sizes, no medical ailments, no walking corrections needed and similar. If you don’t suffer from any particular conditions and can fit into a standard size, then this type of footwear is perfectly comfortable for you.
However, if you need extra support, more stretch or more space in your shoe, then perhaps a different brand, more oriented towards medical footwear, or even just comfortable everyday shoes, is better suited for you.
The shoes which are famous for their red soles belong to the Christian Louboutin brand!
