Adidas is right up there with the most well-known and well-loved sportswear brands. Their Metro III sock is a soft yet supportive one that's bound to help you win your next soccer game.

Made with 98% nylon and 2% spandex, they are incredibly lightweight and moisture-wicking. When your feet sweat, they will dry quickly and will not hold moisture and get heavy as cotton does. However, these materials are also not protective against cold weather and may result in cold toes. The rib support above the ankle area ensures they stay up properly during your game, and their arch support prevents foot fatigue. Small, medium, and large sizes are offered.

Compression socks are vital socks—or, should we say, vitalsox—for high athletic performance. Exclusively made in Italy, the brand Vitalsoz produces some of the most durable, environment-friendly items ever thanks to their secret ingredient: silver.

Taking the concept of physicians to encourage blood flow and prevent swelling, Vitalsox re-engineered compression socks into something specifically for athletes. They provide the majority of their support to the foot rather than the ankles up. The arches are contoured, and blood is pushed from the extremities back to the heart. The result is less risk of inflammation and blood pooling. Moreover, the patented Silver DryStat fabric has silver ions weaved into it to keep bacteria growth in check, which reduces odor. Moisture-wicking polypropylene is also featured for moisture-wicking. Though a bit pricey, it's undeniable that they have priceless benefits.

Low-profile so that they don't show when you wear them, the Hidden Comfort running sock delivers protection and impact resistance thanks to its density. In fact, its design includes a 200 needle-count fabric to create that plush feeling. Balega's Drynamix moisture-wicking fibers keep the feet dry, and the seamless toe and high heel tab ensures they stay on and stay comfortable during your entire run. Offered in small, medium, and large, they offer better sizing accuracy than most.

Who hasn't heard of Nike? This brand is one of the most renown sportswear brands in the world, and for a good reason—they provide consistent quality and support for both amateurs and elites. For basketball players, opt for this pair for your next big game.

Made mostly from polyester, this men's pair is super lightweight and stretchy. When worn, it fits just like a second skin. However, it also provides excellent zonal cushioning to absorb impact and protect the joints. Nike's Dri-FIT Technology is used to keep the feet dry and comfortable while arch compressions support the arches. In addition, it has an anatomical fit, and so they are left/right specific. The disadvantage is that this pair is very costly.

The materials used include 98% polyester, 4% spandex, and 3% nylon. Since they are all synthetic materials, they are lightweight and easy to dry, keeping the feet fresh and odor-free. Their Climalite moisture-wicking yarn also helps. Arch and ankle compressions are in place to ensure good circulation and boost your endurance as a result. This pair is suitable for both men and women and are also available in black. The disadvantage is that they are not very warm and don't have many sizing options.

Ever woken up on a winter morning and dreaded going outside in the cold? Ever wished you could—wait for it—keep your toes in a blanket all day along? Well, with these socks here, you'll feel like you're doing just that thanks to the warmth and comfort provided.

Since they can be pulled up the calves, it's not only your feet that are staying warm and protected, but your ankles and part of your calves, too. In addition, it lets the traditional yet eye-catching diamond pattern be shown for a touch of uniqueness. Made with 58% cotton, 30% polyester, 7% acrylic, 2% spandex, and 3% other fibers, they are stretchy, lightweight, and comfortable at the same time. They are also reasonably priced. The only con is their lack of size options.

Funky socks are coming back into style, and when paired with jeans and low-profile shoes, they add the perfect fun touch to an outfit. Jump on the bandwagon with a pair illustrated with none other than the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti.

This pair is part of the women's Hot Sox Artist Series Collection that features profiles of a wide range of prominent people. These crew socks fit those with women's shoe sizes 4-10.5 and are made with 55% cotton, 40% nylon, 2% spandex, and 1% rubber. The combination makes the stretchy and comfortable. The Nefertiti pair contrasts the profile of the Egyptian queen with a deep raspberry red for a fashionable look. Though not the most supportive or practical pair on the list, keep in mind that they are meant for fashion and not for athletic wear. They are quite affordable, but may also wear out easily.

Acorn's Original Slipper Sock combines the cozy feeling of socks with the protection and support of an indoor slipper; a perfect combination for staying in. It's been made for over forty years and is still well-loved.

Ragg wool is used in the uppers for a snug and comfortable fit. Though slightly scratchy for some, the wool provides insulating and moisture-wicking qualities that are excellent for regulating temperature. The sidewalls are made with durable leather in order to repel stains and water, while the suede sole provides traction.

What's more, the footbed is made from premium multilayer Cloud Cushion, and their hundreds of positive reviews tell us that name is fitting! Customers also say it is durable, comfortable, and quiet. However, a disadvantage is that they run small, especially around the calves. As well, this item is the most expensive one on the list, but this can be justified since they fulfill the role of both sock and slipper.

boldSOCKS is a brand that takes something as simple and seemingly insignificant as socks, and turns it into a fashion statement. They sell tons of patterned and funky socks. However, if you're a classy man who prefers solid colors, they've got you covered, too.

A solid-color red dress sock lets others know that you keep things laid back and simple, but that you also know how to have fun. Even the manufacturer labels this pair as "Bold—conservatively brave." They are super comfortable and practical, too. Made with 80% combed cotton, 18% polyamide and 2% elastane, they are comfortable and flexible for everyday wear. Their standard thickness means they are great for mild weather. Should you like a different shade, many others like mint green, tangerine orange, and even hot pink are offered. Tube socks are knee-high sport socks, usually with two stripes at the top. This one here has that classic design and can be paired with skirts, shorts, or dresses for a cute and casual outfit.

Tube socks are unique in their lack of shaped heel. Sizing isn't much of a headache as a result, which makes picking out your size much easier. Made 90% out of cotton, this pair isn't the best for sports, but is soft and comfortable for street wear. Other materials include spandex, which makes them stretchy. They are thick and able to keep you warm during chillier evenings. They are meant to come up above the knees for the average woman, but some claim the opening rolls down and do not stay up while others say it is too tight.

Criteria Used for Evaluation

Support

When running, jumping, playing sports, or even just walking, enormous amounts of pressure is put on the arch of your foot. Arch support helps to distribute the pressure more evenly throughout the foot to ensure stability and lessen foot fatigue and pain. Those suffering with chronic conditions like collapsed arches can find relief from arch support. Those without conditions can still benefit from them: they help you feel more energized, perform better, and ensure your healthy foot structure stays healthy.

We all know that arch support is crucial for shoes, but what about socks? It's always best to have as much support and protection as possible. In some cases, like with cushioning, too much isn't good. But that's not the case with arch support, which reinforces what you already have rather than supplements it. That's why supportive socks worn under supportive shoes can give you maximum benefit.

To provide that support, socks will have a region around the middle of the foot with a snugger fit. The tighter fit gives you that supportive feeling to reinforce the arches. Because of their anatomical fit, they will also be left/right specific—more hassle than usual, of course, but it's worth the extra two-second glance before slipping them on.

There's also something called compression socks. These are extra-snug socks that improve blood flow, and are worn to alleviate swelling, relieve pain, but also just to enhance athletic performance. Graduated compression ones are tighter around the ankle and looser around the calves, to help move blood back to your heart, increasing endurance and making you feel more energized.

Materials

Most socks are made from a combination of fabrics rather than just one. This is an advantage: you get to experience the good qualities of each, without too much of the detriment. Often, the detriments of different fabrics also balance each other to give you optimal comfort.

The material we're probably all most familiar with is cotton. Though cotton is great for everyday wear and slightly chilly weather, it's an athlete's worst nightmare. These are so moisture-absorbent that they retain perspiration and, combined with friction, can cause blisters. Not to mention the discomfort of playing sports with damp feet! A percentage of it is desirable because it is warm (to some degree) and affordable, but for sports, ensure it's not too high of a percentage.

Nylon is also common. This is a synthetic fibre in the polymers family. Like all synthetics, it's lightweight and quick to dry, making it perfect for sweaty feet. It's also strong, and adds durability when weaved with other less-durable fibres. However, it is not protective against cold weather.

Most socks also contain a small percentage of elastane, spandex, or lycra. These synthetics are there to add more stretchiness and ensure the item fits comfortable. Avoid a too-high percentage (for instance, more than 5%), as it may give the socks a cheap and plastic-y feeling.

Comfort

It goes without saying that when it comes to something that fits as closely as a sock, comfort is absolutely crucial. Though this criteria relies mostly on a balance of other aspects and is hard to discuss on its own, we had to include it as a separate one solely because of its importance.

In the short term, uncomfortable socks might just cause a bit of annoyance. But in the long term, and especially when exercising, they could cause painful blisters and chafing that interfere with your athletic performance and also make it painful to go about your day.

Close-fitting socks are now being made seamlessly, which has huge benefits. The absence of seams against the skin prevents friction and blisters. Breathability, warmth, and softness are also influencing factors for comfort. If you're serious about foot health, you might even consider compression socks, as we mentioned earlier.

Size

Like shoes and clothing, sock size varies from person to person. However, it seems much harder to distinguish what the right size is for each person because the sizes are much more general.

Rather than being marked with one size (ex. Women's size 7), they might be marked with a range instead (ex. Women's size 5-11). Stretchiness that comes from materials like elastane helps in this case. But even the stretchiest of socks often can't really accomodate to all those different feet sizes. You might end up with a heel that goes up your ankle.

The best socks will have more specific size ranges. They will often be marked "small, medium, or large", and you'll need to check the manufacturer's sizing charts to see what sock size corresponds to what shoe size. But with these, you have a higher chance of sizing accuracy.

Value

If you're a frugal person, or if you're on a budget, you might be tempted by the cheapest item you can find. However, high quality comes with a high price, and usually the cheap items will bring only disappointment. On the other hand, not all pricey socks are worth the bucks. It's important to evaluate the features, assess your own needs, and seek a balance between price and quality that's affordable and beneficial.

Socks and shoes tend to be pricey for two reasons: they use expensive materials, or they have top-notch technologies. Sometimes it's both. The pricey materials can ensure better breathability, comfort, and durability, while the technologies provide better support for enhanced performance.

For elite athletes, we highly recommend investing in a pricier pair. After all, playing sports is demanding on the feet, and you deserve the extra support and comfort. If you're an amateur, consider pricier pairs as well, but set a price limit so that you don't pay for what you don't really need. For every day wear, you can be even more frugal; there's no arch support to wear out, so just ensure the material's durably and comfortable. Save your pennies, you'll thank us.

The Meaning Of Red

In general, the color red is associated with love, hate, and courage. It can also represent passion, sexuality, and energy.

Pschychological Effects

It is said that too little of the color red causes feelings of lethargy and caution.

Fashion Tip

Pair bright-colored socks with neutral-colored pants. The contrast has an eye-catching effect, but also doesn't overwhelm the onlooker's senses.

Other Factors to Consider

Color

As we mentioned in our brief introduction, red can be considered both intense and conservative. It represents emotions like love, hate, courage, and strength, but is also a fairly common and versatile color. Either way, it's undeniably visible and will make you seem bold and energized.

However, if you grow to like your red socks, you might find yourself wanting the same model in different shades, both bright and neutral. Thankfully, most of the products on our list are also sold in color other than red. White and black are obvious choices, but it's not uncommon to find blue, grey, and yellow. Some may also be offered in rarer shades like tangerine and neon.

Though red is a great color, don't hesitate to explore with different shades!

Insulation

Did you know that the feet is one of the areas of the body that is most vulnerable to the cold? In frigid weather, the chill is first to affect the extremities of the body. This includes the ears, the nose, and the hands as well. But while many are busy putting on gloves and earmuffs, few put the same consideration to the feet.

Only in extreme weather are thermal socks necessary. But for a typical spring or autumn day, it's still crucial to consider warmth. Cotton, commonly found in everyday socks, is warmer than synthetics like nylon and spandex. However, its tendency to absorb moisture makes it undesirable for outdoor sports like soccer and baseball. As a result, socks suitable for athletics often offer bare minimum protection against cold weather.

When exercising, it's thus important to think of warmth as well as support. Make sure the socks you pick includes fabric that at least offers some protection against the chill. You don't want your feet to overheat, but also have to prevent them from freezing!

Bottom Line

If you're tired of neutral colors, what better color to opt for than red? This bold, eye-catching color is sure to add a personal style to your semi-formal office wear; or to show your sports opponent that you've got a daring streak. With options for both men and women, both athletic and regular wear, we hope our list can guide you on your search for your next favorite pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

q: When can I wear red socks?
a:

For casual and semi-formal events, we say go right ahead. For formal events, consider whether eccentricity will be appropriate. If you know how to pair it well, you'll still get plenty of compliments.

q: Is red too eye-catching ?
a:

Red is a fairly bold color, but it's still conservative compared to others like hot pink and turquoise. It's a good, safe choice for those just starting to experiment with their style. However, the more eccentric ones may not find it eye-catching enough, let alone too eye-catching.

q: Are the items on the list offered in other colors?
a:

Most are offered in more neutral shades as well as other bold shades. Patterned socks might be available in different colors but only with different patterns.

q: How do I make sure the product comes in the same shade as in the pictures?
a:

Unfortunately, you'll have to either trust your eyes or trust the previous customers. You can take a peek at customer reviews to see if anybody complains of receiving a different shade, but there's nothing much that can be done.

q: What can I wear red socks with?
a:

Red goes with all the usual neutral colors like beige, grey, and white. However, it's also said to look good with mustard yellow, silver, and blue, if you know how to pair it well. And make sure your shoes are low-profile so that we can see the socks to begin with!
