Best Shoes for Rain Reviewed & Rated for Performance

If you’re like me and happen to live in a city that never stops raining, you know the headache that comes along every time you need to get dressed and leave your house. It begins with the never ending layer of clothes, making you look drab and bulky, and is always finished off with an unflattering pair of boots that are then uncomfortable throughout the day.

The newest update to this page welcomed ten items to the list of best shoes for rain. With a focus on how waterproof they were, how they looked on, and whether or not they were comfortable, we have put together a list that showcases a variety of different styles and types of footwear. Following the list you will find a criteria section where there is more details on how each shoe was selected, and the specific features we focused on. At the end is a FAQ that answers some of the top questions regarding rain shoes, and if certain materials are adequate for rainy days.

As much as my rain boots have saved me from soggy feet time and time again, there is nothing worse than an entire day of work, stuck in wellingtons, and feeling the restrictive and sweaty rubber around your legs all day. While you can always opt to bring a pair of shoes with you to swap in to, who really wants to carry around extra shoes every day that it rains?

Instead of always having to go for the knee high rubber boots, there are options out there that will keep your feet just as dry and your wardrobe far more stylish. A simple shoe can feel incredibly more comfortable than a boot, and they are often lighter and more breathable.

Rainy days don’t have to spell the end of your ability to wear regular shoes, so long as you make sure you’re picking out something that will stand up against the rain. We’ve taken the guess work out of this for you, and below you will find out list of the best shoes you can wear in the rain.

10 Best Shoes for Rain

1. ASICS Gel Cumulus 17 GTX

Asics is a brand we see all of the time, on a variety of lists, and the reason is that they make great shoes for nearly any occasion. The Gel Cumulus 17 is a great example of what Asics produces, and this is a shoe you will love in both rain or shine. Technically a running shoe, you will find that you have all day comfort and support, and your feet will stay completely dry even when that rain starts really coming down. For those of you who like your shoes to stand out a bit, this is an option that is brightly colored and will give any outfit the bit of pop that it needs. So whether you're going for a run, or just need to run some errands, this is our topic pick to throw on for those rainy days.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
Any time you see a shoe model followed by "GTX", it means that the shoe is equipped with a Gore Tex lining. The snug fitting upper features this waterproof membrane, which will allow you to wear this shoes and not have any water penetrate through. The gusseted tongue works in tandem with the membrane, ensuring that no debris or rain gets through around your ankle area either. The outsole of the shoe is also designed for rain and snow, built from Asics High Abrasion Rubber that offers great traction on wet roads so you won't be slipping and falling with these on!

Notable Feature - ComforDry SockLiner
Easily removed, this sockliner does an amazing job of managing moisture and reducing any build up of sweat or odors inside your shoes. If you are wearing shoes in the rain, one of the concerns will always be that the dampness outside will end up ruining the shoes and also that they will leave the interior, and your feet, smelly and gross. The ComforDry SockLiner is equipped with antimicrobial properties, ensuring your feet stay dry, healthy, and odor free regardless of the weather.

Cost and Value
This shoe isn't very expensive at all, and is a great option for runners who want to be able to still go outdoors even in the rain or snow, as well as individuals who prefer wearing running shoes over other types of footwear. Comfortable, easy to get on and off, and offering the ability to wear with or without socks, this is a great all around choice. As this is not the absolute newest model from Asics, the price has been reduced so you should score yourself a pretty good deal on a pair of Gel Cumulus 17 GTX's.

2. Converse CT All Star Hi Rubber

If you're an avid Converse wearer, then you've probably already had the unfortunate experience of wearing them outside when the weather was less than pleasant. For all the great things Converse offers, being rain proof is certainly not one of them, and that canvas upper gets soaked pretty quickly. But all of you Chuck Taylor lovers can now rejoice, as Converse has finally released a high top that has a rubber upper; goodbye rain boots and hello rain shoes! Offered in a variety of colors, these are going to be great for music festivals, running errands, dates, and even part of a casual outfit in the office. With wax coated laces and a gusseted tongue, these are one of the best pairs of great looking kicks that are going to stand up well on any rainy day.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
With a rubber upper you are getting the exact same concept that is employed with wellingtons, but the benefit is you don't have the same uncomfortable, knee high fit. Most reviewers have found that these fit almost exactly the same as regular converse, and offer the same look and comfort level that you've come to know and love. Rain wear doesn't always have to be so different from your regular shoes, and for those who love wearing Converse to outdoor concerts, this is an option that will keep your feet dry and the mud from staining your shoes.

Notable Feature - Feet Don't Get Too Hot
One of my personal least favourite things about rubber rain boots is that my feet always end up overly hot and sweaty. The boot always suctions on to my leg, which is great for keeping rain out, but it doesn't allow for any moisture or heat to escape. The Converse Rubber High Tops have made sure that you won't overheat throughout the day, but offering up an ankle that isn't too snug against your leg. While this may allow some water in if your pants don't cover the opening, it also means that your foot will stay significantly cooler while you wear these shoes.

Cost and Value
These are extremely inexpensive, which kind of fits with Converse in general. Their shoes don't tend to typically be very pricey, and they have kept that theme going even with these rubber shoes. A pair of these will fit in to virtually any budget, making them a perfect option to have on hand for the days when the rain hits and you want to wear something more comfortable. Given how versatile and easy to pair these are, there is very little reason to not pick up a pair and give them a try.
  • Waterproof Rubber Upper
  • Same Style as Regular Converse
  • Fully Gusseted Tongue
  • Wax Coated Laces
  • Thick Soles
  • Allows Heat to Escape
  • Variety of Color Options
  • Runs True to Size

3. Oka-B Taylor

As a die hard wearer of flats, I know more than anyone that these are not the kind of shoes you think to put on when the rain hits. Every pair of flats I have owned have been extremely delicate, easily falling apart for seemingly no reason at all; throw rain in to that mix, and your flats are ruined before you're even halfway out the door. These flats from Oka-B are amazing for anyone who wants a flat they can take in the rain, as they are made from a jelly material that is waterproof. The top of these Taylor flats is still open, like any other flat, so the top of your foot is not at all protected, but if you have to have a pair of flats on that rainy day, these are the ones you are going to want to reach for.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
Flats and rain have never gone well together, but we all know that flats are the easiest, most comfortable type of footwear there is. These jelly flats are going to let you walk through rainy streets and they will do their best at keeping the rain from soaking your feet. The tops of your feet are still left open, but with an umbrella, or long pants, you can easily keep them covered enough that they don't get too wet. Once at your destination, a quick wipe will dry them completely and you can spend the rest of your day in footwear that is lightweight, comfortable, and very cute.

Notable Feature - Massage Arch
The downside to flats is that they generally offer zero arch support, or support in general. The most basic of footwear, they are so simple to throw on, but over time your foot really does notice that lack of cushioning and support. The Taylor flats from Oka-B have added in some extra arch support in the form of a gentle massage bed, designed to give you that cushion while also using small nodes to press in to your arch. Those with very high arches may not notice too much of a difference, but for average arches this is a serious step up from other flats on the market.

Cost and Value
One of the things that makes flats a great choice is that they are cheap, and unfortunately you are losing out a bit in this area. While they are still one of the absolute cheapest pairs of footwear on this list, they are costing you more than if you picked up a basic pair of flats elsewhere. With that said, this company is ethical, sustainable, and vegan so you can at least feel good knowing that every pair of shoes is fully recyclable and is made from no animal by products. This adds a feel good vibe to the shoe, and takes away from the sting of the price tag.

  • Easy to Slip On
  • Waterproof Jelly Material
  • Recyclable
  • Vegan
  • Massaging Arch Support
  • Wide Variety of Color Options
  • Great for Any Occasion

4. Sloggers Rain and Garden

4. Sloggers Rain and Garden
Clog style shoes are popular for many reasons, and one of the big ones is how comfortable they are. Often extremely roomy, these are the shoes you you want to throw on right as you're heading out the door. Easy to slip on, many people find these to be their first choice as they are heading out the door, and this makes them a bit different from other rain shoes and boots. The roomy interior allows for you to pair them with a thick pair of cosy socks, or opt to go barefoot if that is more your style. The funky designs and patterns will add a splash of color to a gloomy, rainy day, making for a fun pair of shoes you will love.

Notable Feature - Insoles
Every pair of Sloggers shoes and boots feature their personal All Day Comfort insoles, which really do live up to their name. Soft and padded, these insoles will give your foot that extra support it needs so that you have zero foot fatigue by the end of the day. Extremely light, most wearers say that these shoes make you feel like you're not wearing anything at all, and the soles of your feet are surrounded in a plush cushioning that is superb. With the roomy inside, this is the kind of shoe you will reach for time and time again.

Cost and Value
One of the great things about the Sloggers brand is that none of their shoes or boots are overly pricey. At around $30 a pair, these are easily worth the money and given how frequently you will wear them, you may want to consider picking up more than one pair. So many color and pattern options to choose from allow you to opt for a more personalized look, so that your rainy day outfit no longer has to be drab and boring.

5. Crocs Gianna Kitten

5. Crocs Gianna Kitten
You can't have a list of waterproof, or comfortable, shoes without seeing at least one pair of Crocs on the list. While it's generally the clog that comes up time and time again, we went down a different path and decided to showcase the Gianna Kitten Heel. Doesn't matter what the occasion is, having to wear heels in the rain is a drag, and it's something the majority of people have to do even if they don't want to. Instead of slipping and sliding around in a shoe that isn't mean for wet weather, you can now opt for a cute, attractive heel that is designed to get wet. Made with Crocs standard Croslite material, these shoe can step through puddles and cross town without slipping or ending up ruined. While the top is still open like a traditional heeled shoe, an umbrella or long pant will help minimize the wetness on the top of your foot.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
Whether you like it or not there is going to come a rainy day that requires a pair of heels, and as you slip down the road trying to balance and stay dry, you are going to wish you had a pair of these Crocs Gianna Kitten Heels. With a low heel hight, and a surprisingly stylish design, you can enjoy a dry foot at work, in a meeting, or on that date without having to wear clunky and typical waterproof footwear. The bottom of this shoe has great traction, actually making them a good choice for rain soaked roads and pavement.

Notable Feature - Circulation Nubs
As anyone who has worn a pair of heels for long periods of time will tell you, they are not the most comfortable type of footwear. Your foot is at a weird angle, the toe area tends to pinch, and after a few hours you feel like your feet have lost all sense and circulation. With the Gianna Kitten Heels you should find that comfort has been brought back, and Crocs has designed circulation nubs inside the shoe that helps keep the blood flowing and moving. In typical Crocs fashion, these heels are roomier, more comfortable, and more cushioned than the majority of heels on the market.

Cost and Value
Sitting around the $50 mark, these are pretty inexpensive for a good pair of heels. Crocs has never been a very expensive footwear choice, which is part of the reason why they have remained so very popular. While the majority of heels sit in your closet waiting for some special occasion, the comfort provided by these will make you want to pull them out more frequently and wear them about town. Given that they work well for rainy weather, any type of meeting, date, or formal occasion should see these making an appearance as they look and feel great.

7. Native Ap Hydro

7. Native Ap Hydro
Chukka boots are all the rage right now, and that is because they are extremely fashionable, pair well with almost anything, and are perfect for any casual or formal event. The one downside to chukka boots, however, is that they tend to not be the best for rain, as the material is usually suede which can be ruined if exposed to water frequently. If you need a pair of chukka boots that are going to be your go to pair of rainy day shoes, then look no further than the AP Hydro from Native. A green company that produces vegan footwear, this is a shoe that you can morally feel great about, while your foot also feels great given how comfortable they are.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
The thick rubber outsole is going to allow you to walk through puddles and rainy streets with ease, keeping your foot nicely above the water and ultimately dry. The upper material has been properly treated with Scotchgard, a great product that ensures that no water will be seeping in to these chukka boots any time soon. Fully water resistant, rain should be no match for this boot, and you will enjoy a nice, dry foot all day long. With it's great shock absorption and plush interior, comfort and dryness are to be expected.

The contrast Apollo platform on the bottom adds to the overall looking, giving a pop of white that not only looks cool, but will help absorb shock and give you a more cushioned step.

Cost and Value
Green and vegan footwear always tend to be a bit more expensive, and that's because the materials used are generally higher quality. Not only do the materials add cost, but the process in which the shoes are made is more ethical and environmentally friendly, which can make it more expensive to produce these shoes. With that said, these aren't that much different in price than other chukka boots on the market, so if you want something that will do well in the rain, look great, and make a positive impact on the environment then the AP Hydro's from Native are going to be a great choice.

8. Sam Edelman Petty

8. Sam Edelman Petty
This ankle bootie is absolutely adorable, and it can easily be dressed up or down for whatever occasion you have on your schedule. Work, party, or just casually running errands, this shoe is going to be perfect rain or shine. While technically made of suede, this shoe wouldn't be most people's first guess when it comes to rain proof footwear, but surprisingly this bootie has proven itself on those rainy weather outings to a number of different wearers. The small heel and slightly raised platform keep the underside of your foot dry, while the treated suede upper repels water for a dry upper foot as well.
Expand to see more
Why is This Good for the Rain?
These come in both a suede and leather option, and for the best bet in the rain you are going to want to opt for the leather when you buy. Although these aren't as waterproof as some of the other shoes we've looked at, they are a great option for those who still want cuteness and style even on days filled with rain. I wouldn't recommend taking this through deep water, or getting them soaked, but for a drizzly day these will hold up perfectly and give you that cute look that is sometimes hard to obtain when the weather isn't great.

Notable Feature - Simple and Comfortable
These boots have a very sleek and simple design which makes them great for a variety of occasions. Easy to throw on and go, you can achieve a great look with minimal effort required. Not only do these booties look fantastic on, but they are also very comfortable to wear and stand in for long hours. The simple color options allow these to pair great with jeans, skirts, and even dresses, so versatility is key here.

Cost and Value
These aren't the most expensive shoes featured on our list, but they certainly are not the cheapest either. Right around the $100 mark, they are pretty average for a pair of name brand, high quality booties and the price shouldn't been too surprising for most. Given how versatile and simple the Petty bootie is, most people should find that they get a ton of use out of this shoe, in nice and rainy weather. Being able to pair these with most outfits makes this a worthwhile purchase overall.

9. Adidas Superstar

9. Adidas Superstar
An absolute iconic classic, the Adidas Originals Superstar is a shoe that is instantly recognizable and looks great with just about anything. What some may not ever consider, however, is that this sneaker is more than just a fashion statement, and it actually is suitable for rainy day wear. Just because a shoe may not look like a rain boot, doesn't mean it won't hold up in the rain, and because of the leather upper this sneaker will take you where you need to go - rain or shine. This show has been around since the '70s and there's plenty of reasons why it has remained popular for so many decades. Simple, understated, soft, and comfortable this is a shoe that so many people love. The next time it rains, forego the rubber boots and heavy shoes, and instead opt for the great classic that is the Adidas Original Superstar.

Why is This Good for the Rain?
The rubber sole on these shoes is very thick and durable, resisting wear and tear over time. The soles of your feet will stay dry as the rubber refuses to let any water in, and the rest of your feet can stay dry thanks to the leather upper. Rain doesn't change our preferences, and while some people may not mind the heavyness that comes along with rain boots, others generally prefer to just throw their usual sneakers on and go. With the Adidas Original Superstar you can keep your classic style going, and enjoy the rain without the consequences of soggy, wet feet.

Notable Feature - Classic Comfort
Like previously mentioned, these shoes are iconic classics, and they have held their status for well over 40 years. Simple and understated, this is a shoe that looks great with jeans, can be worn in the summer, stands up to rain, and can be worn for nearly any casual, and sometimes less casual, occasion. Extremely comfortable, wearers love this shoe because it keeps their feet feeling good throughout the day, and you don't end up with fatigue or soreness after hours on your feet.

Cost and Value
Sitting right at the $100 mark, these shoes are not that pricey for such a reputable name brand like Adidas. Not only are you buying from a company that has a reputation and history behind them, but you're also buying a shoe that has decades of performance to speak for it. Any shoe that has stayed a staple for this long must be doing something right, and for that, and many other reasons this shoe is well worth the money.

10. Tommy Hilfiger Harley

10. Tommy Hilfiger Harley
There was no way to make a list of the best shoes for rain without including at least one more traditional style shoe. This ankle duck boot is a more typical approach to rainy day footwear, but don't let that fool you in to thinking it's just a typical, slightly uncomfortable rain boot. Tommy Hilfiger has taken the rain bootie and made one that is actually surprisingly comfortable and roomy. Paired with a pair of warm socks, these duck boots will keep your feet warm and dry with ease, and you will look great in them as well. The Harley features a colorful, rubber lower half, paired with a tan, synthetic upper for a unique and classy look.
Expand to see more
Why is This Good for the Rain?
Given that this is a rain boot on the bottom, it should be pretty clear why this is an ideal choice on rainy days. Deep puddles, heavy downpours, and even sleet and slush are no match for this boot and your foot will stay completely dry. The ankle bootie is also more comfortable that the usual knee high length, making for a more breathable and lightweight shoe. The bottom of the shoe has a very grippy sole, making these easy to walk in on wet pavement or even icy and slippery roads.

Notable Feature - Roomy Interior
One of the downsides to rubber boots is that they tend to fit quite snuggly, and the rubber suctions on to your foot and leg to keep the rain out. This bootie is the opposite, and actually has a very spacious interior that is perfect for thick, warm socks. On cold rainy days, or even in the snow, this boot will keep you warm and comfortable and your toes should be able to splay naturally with ease. There is even enough space to add your own inserts, giving you more control over aspects such as arch support or other orthotic needs.

Cost and Value
Tommy Hilfiger is a very well known, and luxury brand so there should be no expectation of this being a cheap shoe. If you want a high end brand, that still offers great and realistic durability than this shoe may be worth the extra money for you. One great thing to note regarding price is that fact that these aren't a new model from the brand. This means that a lot of places will offer these at a discounted rate, making them much more affordable and worth it.

There are countless options available when it comes to shoes that can be worn in the rain, and we are just showcasing ten of the best ones we found available. The market is saturated with different boots in all heights and styles, but the focus here was mainly on shoes, be it flats, sneakers, pumps, or running shoes, so that you could have a bit more variety in your wardrobe.

Rainy days no longer mean you’re limited to pulling on your rubber boots and stomping your way about town. Nor do you have to spray and lather every pair of shoes you buy in water resistant products in the hopes of protecting the shoe and keeping your toes from getting soggy.

By focusing our attention on specific materials, designs, and brands we hope we have created for you a list that meets your needs, and that gave you a great starting point for shoes you can wear in the rain. If you want to know more about how our selections were made, continue reading on to our criteria section, where we break down the main factors and discuss why each feature impacted our choices.

Criteria for Selecting the Best Shoes for Rain

While not ever shoe featured on this list was fully waterproof, the focus was on making sure that every shoe would be able to hold up in rainy weather. Whether that be waterproof, water resistant, or water repellant, every shoe has some type of feature that will help keep your feet nice and dry when it starts to rain.

The majority on the list ended up being waterproof, as that is the most effective option and is more versatile for situations that need a shoe that you can wear in heavy rain. A light drizzle won’t affect the majority of shoes, so if you’re on here reading about shoes for rain you probably want something that can take more than just a couple drops of water.

Materials like rubber and leather are seen again and again on this list, and that’s because they are two of the best for keeping your feet dry. Other materials exist, such as neoprene, but not a lot of shoes are made from that material so for a more common, every day approach we tended to stick more with rubber and leather.

Not all leather is going to be the best for rain, however, and so we did make sure to only select shoes that were going to be durable enough and not end up ruined over time. Suede is one of the least popular choices in rainy weather, as the material tends to get damaged easily when it comes in contact with water. Suede is technically a form of leather, so this is important to look at and consider before you purchase a pair of shoes that you know are going to get wet. Not all leather is waterproof or water resistant, so do keep that in mind and make sure to read carefully before you buy.

Rubber is the most common upper material that people opt for when choosing rain gear, as it is completely waterproof and is extremely effective at lasting a long a time. Even though this is such a common material, we tried not to make this list one sided, and so you will notice that not every shoe features a rubber element. Rubber may be great at keeping water out, but it’s also really good at keeping heat and moisture in. It is not a breathable material, and by the end of the day you may find your feet overly hot and sweaty. With that in mind, we focused on low cut, more breathable options in order to offer up the best of both worlds.

Another factor that was highly taken in to consideration was how versatile a shoe really was. It’s great to have shoes on hand that you can wear on rainy days, but if they are just limited to keeping your feet dry then you may as well just opt for a traditional rubber boot.

If you are looking for shoes instead of boots then that possibly means you want something that you can wear for different occasions, and that has the versatility to be worn in rain as well as in nicer weather. Every shoe we selected was thought about in these terms, and we made sure to select shoes that could be worn in a casual environment, at the office, to parties, and even to music festivals.

There are so many different types of footwear, and the aim with this list was to showcase rain friendly options for as many styles as we could. From rubber pumps to waterproof Converse, this list focused on highlighting how wide ranging shoes for rain could be.

Not every option is going to suit every person, so the more styles we can show the more likely you will be able to find what’s right for you. When possible, we tried to mention the types of occasions each shoe would be suited for, as well as examples of situations that would call for that style or design.

Varying color options, patterns, and styles means that you can enjoy dry feet while still looking cool and stylish, never having to sacrifice fashion due to bad weather.

You may have noticed as you read through the list that every shoe contained a small write up on why it is good for the rain. Yes, we offered up a wide variety of footwear, but style isn’t the exact reason you came on to read this list. Every shoe on here needed to answer the question “why is this good for the rain?”, and we did our best to really give you that answer.

The simple answer is because it keeps your foot dry, and that could have been written for every single shoe. But by that standard there are thousands of shoes that could have made this list, so what made these ten truly stand out.

From traction to versatility, comfort and style – every shoe on this list went beyond just keeping you dry to offer up a shoe that you are going to want to have in your closet. If you live in a rainy climate, you are going to wear these shoes a lot, and you are going to want the shoe to be durable enough that you don’t have to replace it constantly. For those who live in less rain soaked cities, you are going to want a shoe that isn’t just pulled out on rainy days, because that’s not worth the money if you’re only wearing it a few weeks out of the year.

Fashion and appearance was a major influencing factor, and choosing shoes that looked good was almost as important as picking them based on their ability to keep water out. Everyone wants to look good when you go outside in to the world, and so the idea is to have a shoe that makes you feel good in all senses of the term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.: What Are Rain Shoes?
The simple answer to this would be shoes that you can wear in the rain, but what does that actually consist of? Rain shoes typically are waterproof to some degree, allowing you to get them wet without it affecting the shoe or your feet. Many rain shoes are also warmer than regular shoes, as rainy days tend to be a bit more chilly, so you want a shoe that will keep you warm. Surprisingly, a lot of rain shoes also tend to be more roomy, allowing you to pair them with thicker socks or to insert your own insoles and orthotics based on your personal needs and preferences.

Q.: Will Rain Ruin Suede Shoes?
The answer to this is yes and no, because it is really going to depend on the shoe itself. While suede is not recommended for getting wet, there are different sprays and treatments that can be used to help protect your suede shoes in rain. If you are looking for footwear that is going to get wet frequently, suede is one of the materials that you may want to stay away from, as even with sprays and protections it can still get damaged over time and you may have to replace them more often.

Q.: Can Rain Shoes be Formal?
Absolutely! The first thing that comes to mind when most people think of rain shoes is rubber boots, and that isn’t the more formal of footwear. Luckily the market has given us a vast number of different options, and even on this list you will find varying footwear of all different styles. Forget clunky, waterproof boots and instead opt for a pair of pumps, or even flats, that will look great and not get soaking wet.

Q.: Are All Rain Shoes Heavy?
One of the downsides to waterproof footwear is that it does tend to be heavier than it’s non-waterproof counterparts. Materials like leather and rubber do weigh more, so the most lightweight option generally is the one that isn’t going to do well in the rain. With that said, heavier doesn’t always mean heavy, and there are lots of choices out there for shoes that don’t weigh much at all. Running shoes are still going to be lighter than thick rubber boots, even if those particular running shoes may weigh more than other running shoes. It’s all about finding the type of footwear you like, and you will be able to opt for less heavy choices if you’d like.
