Make Your Own Massage Oil from Home
There is little more sensual than a good foot rub. It’s a great way to show your partner that you love them and that you care about how they’re feeling. There’s something to be said about noticing that the love of your life is super stressed, and doing something about it. There are several “languages of love”, they say… and foot rubs cover quite a few.
But, what better way to take it a step further and customize the massage oil entirely for your partner? If they have a favorite scent, you can incorporate it in and make sure it’s exactly what they want. From floral to spicy to creamy, there are all sorts of scent profiles out there. Many people have some pretty strong opinions as to which ones they like, and which ones they don’t.
Besides this, your partner may have allergies which prevent them from being able to use conventional, mass-produced options. You can avoid any of their allergens by being extremely careful about which ingredients you choose to use.
With so many reasons to try your hand at making a massage oil, why wait? Read the article below for the how-to, as well as a few different recipes you can use to get you started! Feel free to customize them to your exact tastes… or the taste of your partner! Oh, also, these oils are great to use all over the body, not just the feet, so you can also make them edible. Ooh, la, la!
Which Oils To Use
There are so many types and styles of oil, so it can be pretty difficult to choose one. There are a few things you should keep in mind when you’re picking out the right one. There are also two different types of oils you’re going to be using: the carrier oil, and the essential oil.
The carrier oil is, as you probably already guessed, the oil which “carries” the more fragrant essential oil. We’ll go over carrier oils first!
- Grapeseed Oil: If you aren’t a huge fan of feeling “oiled” then you’ll love that grapeseed oil is super rich in linoleic acid, which helps it dry all the quicker. You could even blend grapeseed with another type of oil in order to get a silky feel without the greasy feeling that can come with thicker, longer lasting oils.
- Apricot Kernel: Sweet and light are the best words to describe apricot kernel oil. This has a subtle scent that can easily be complementary to a stronger essential oil. It’s also highly nourishing for your skin, and can be a lovely oil to use!
- Sweet Almond Oil: This is an absolutely wonderful base if you need a smooth, silky oil that’s going to glide easily over skin. It’ll nourish your thirsty skin as well as give you a much softer feeling foot. Sweet almond is one of my all-time favorite scents and tends to be the most popular for massage oils because of this.
- Sesame Oil: Sesame oil is fairly traditional to a specific type of massage, ayurvedic. It can be a little hard to get used to unless you like sweet and savory, however. It does also have linoleic acid, like grapeseed oil, which means it evaporates off quicker than other oils might.
- Olive Oil: Do I even need to talk about how great olive oil is for you in general? Internally and externally, this oil has your back. There’s another acid present, oleic, in fact, which has been shown to lower blood pressure. Olive oil is the best option for those with sensitive skin since it’s less likely to cause a reaction or flare up.
- Avocado Oil: Mature skin will benefit the most from an avocado-based massage oil. It’s highly moisturizing and will absorb into the skin quite nicely. Many people prefer avocado oil if they’re looking to steer clear of animal products, or they live somewhere that has it readily available. Personally, I think investing in a super high-quality one is worth every penny if you’re making a massage oil!
- Coconut Oil: Going for the long haul? Have quite a few knots and kinks to work out? Then you need a thicker base that will have much more staying power. Lauric acid is also present in this type of carrier oil which is a huge promoter of healthful skin.
Once you’ve figured out which one you like the most, you can start thinking of what kind of scent profile you want to use. Make sure you start off with a good base, however, and take the oil’s natural scent into consideration. Olive oil, for example, probably will smell better with woodsy scents than it would with a citrus scent.
Essential Oil Recipes
Now that we’ve gone over the different carrier oils, let’s talk about which scent blends are the best. These are just my personal recipes that I’m going to share with you, and it’s up to you to customize them accordingly. If you understand the basics of scent profiles, feel free to just throw some oils together until you get what you want! I’m going to go over the basic “families” of scent, and which ones tend to pair together. Then, we’ll talk about the recipes I’ve whipped up as a result of those families!
A scent family is a general grouping of scents which fall under a similar category of scent. You’ve probably heard of a few of them, especially if you like perfume. Let’s go over a few of the main ones, and describe a bit about them:
- Floral: Possibly the most popular of the families, floral is a huge base that can be paired with almost any other family of scents. It can also be great just on its own! Many famous perfumes are floral, such as Chanel No. 5. Florals are feminine, sweet, and lovely. They remind you of girlish charm and are the exact opposite of woodsy. You want to wear these when you’re trying to look fragile and innocent. They’re among my favorite because they’re so classic and timeless!
- Fruity: These scents are vast and span several different styles. This family basically encompasses everything and anything that isn’t part of the citrus category. Citrus is, after all, fairly unique to other fruits. Whether it be raspberry, mango, honeydew, or cherry, it belongs under fruity. You’ll often find this family paired with others, such as green or floral or green because they make a great accompaniment.
- Oceanic: This is actually a style coined by Christian Dior himself. The first scent featuring this sort of blend was Dune, first debuted in 1991. It conjures visions of frothy waves breaking on the shore, clothing dried out in the soft sunshine, and other clean, light aromatic profiles. These are great as basic workplace scents. Many offices have gone scent-free, but for those that are still able to wear perfume, you still want to err on the side of less potent. Oceanic is the best way to this. Be wary, however, because some of them can smell like alcohol and chemicals. When you go this route you absolutely want to go high-end, and always go in-store to make sure that you know the scent you’re getting is good.
- Green: As a family, this is like a cousin of Woodsy. It’s a wonderful scent to accompany days out at the park, or in other social settings outside. It’s cleaner and lighter than something that would belong in the woodsy scent category, which might be perfect for those who don’t like super potent blends. Have you ever loved the smell of grass after it rains or a freshly mowed lawn? Then this is going to be the perfect scent family for you!
- Woodsy: Hiking enthusiasts will breathe easy with a deep, earthy scent in the woodsy family. This is a lovely, classic scent that almost everybody can pull off. They give you a bold, powerful musk… and I say musk in the best possible way. Wear a woodsy scent when you want to feel a little bit more dominant, with a hint of natural power.
- Spicy: Have you ever smelled clove or cinnamon? This is what I mean by “spicy”. Gingerbread is another popular one, as is cardamom. The last one on that list is especially popular, and I think it smells fantastic during the winter. Speaking of which, these are definitely winter scents, and perfect for the holiday season.
- Citrus: These scents taste like a fresh, zesty bite into an orange or other similar fruits. They’re tangy, and sweet, and sour all at once. Citrus is a super popular profile because it’s incredibly versatile and highly energizing. You want to wear it to brighten your day and compliment the good weather. It’s definitely a popular spring and summer scent!
The base you want to use will determine what scent blends you’ll want to combine with it. Sesame oil, for example, won’t pair well with a floral or oceanic family of scents. It would be much better joined with a woodsy or, even better, a spicy blend. Once you have your base determined, think about which scents would be complementary and how you would like to tackle them. Better yet, use one of my recipes below in order to think less, and massage more!
- RENEW: This is a scent to refresh and awaken you. The sweet notes of vanilla and citrus are only uplifted by the deeper aromas present. Renew is perfect for leaving the office and ‘slipping into something more comfortable. Wear it when you want to be feminine, sultry, and fully awake for the long evening ahead. Citrus, Neroli, Bergamot, Vanilla.
- UNWIND: Instead of a night on the town, Unwind is better suited to luxuriously lounging at home. This is a mellow, sweet scent that will remind you of sleepy cuppas and the best kind of solitude. That is a calm morning to wake up in blissful silence. There’s a window open, and a lovely breeze. That’s what Unwind smells, and feels, like. Jasmine, Vanilla, Amber, Valerian.
- GOING HOME: The holidays are fast approaching, so let me share with you one of my absolute favorite scents from this little recipe book. After the holiday feast, there is a small gathering in the living room with the fireplace roaring. It’s aromatic qualities err on the side of deep, smokey, and spicy-sweet. The gingerbread smells like dessert approaching, with a vanilla touch to represent that tall glass of milk given alongside. Gingerbread, Amber, Sweet Almond, Honey, Vanilla.
- OUTERSPACE: Phone home, space fanatics, because your scent has arrived. Using the chemical compositions detected in the far reaches of space, scientists have determined its taste. While some of the flavors are disputed, raspberry is always mentioned. I’ve gone with the recipe I find most appealing, and let it take me to a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away. Raspberry, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Honey.
How To Make Massage Oil
Let’s get into the meat of the matter now that you have some ideas for recipes! I tried to give ones with reoccurring scents, like vanilla. I’m a big sucker for it in general, however. It adds such sweet, creamy notes! Anyways, let’s talk about how, exactly, you’re going to go about making these.
You’re obviously going to want to choose your carrier oil, and the container used will depend on the type. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you’re going to store that in a jar you can scoop it out of. Liquids will go into the dark-colored bottle of your choosing! I love getting apothecary-style bottles since they look so rustic.
Consider the type of carrier oil you’re using. Coconut oil will be best paired with scents that go well with, well, coconut. You wouldn’t want to use a spicey, woodsy blend with it, for example.
Get enough of it to fill the bottle of your choosing. This is where things get slightly tricky, and where I can’t help you with measurements. Part of the reason that I didn’t go over measurements is one, I generally don’t take them when I’m making my blends, and two, the amount of carrier oil will determine how much EO you use.
If the oil is solid at room temperature then you’ll melt it at this point. Have your EOs at the ready for the next step, which is the blending stage. Pour your carrier into the container of your choosing. Begin to add drops of EOs, taking care to always smell them carefully between drops. A big tip is using your own skin between the drops for an easier time determining the new aromatic profile. Using coffee beans is actually useless since it just clogs up your senses with the smell of coffee. Because you’re used to your own scent, it will help clear up your nose. Just smell your wrist!
Once it’s combined and you’re happy with the final scent, you can then seal the bottle or jar, and start rolling it gently. Doing so between your palms will help heat up the contents a little bit and allows the oils to blend together.
That’s all there is to it! You’ve now made your very own blend of massage oil. You can give this away as gifts (perhaps discreetly to your friends getting married?), or keep it to use on yourself.
Massaging your feet can increase blood circulation, help you relax, and just feels pretty damn good. Even just rubbing the oil in for a nourishing soak is a great promoter of healthy skin. Use it however you’d like, and know that you only have good for you ingredients in it that you carefully chose yourself! Even better, those with allergies or sensitivities can rest easy knowing their blend won’t cause a reaction.
