A trail shoe from New Balance? The New Balance Fresh Foam Gobi v2 is a trail shoe of New Balance’s design that gives wearers everything and more that they may need to really go all out on trails without opening them up to the danger of injuring themselves. All of the functionality of a trail shoe is in place, all with the functionality of the fresh foam material allowing the shoe to ensure that the foot of the wearer enjoys a responsive overall ride. In all honesty, the design of this shoe is so versatile that it can be worn on surfaces outside of the traditional trail and can be used on surfaces such as roads; this is a function that we don’t see too often and honestly probably won’t see much after this one.

Outsole

Okay, so the outsole of the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 is designed to give the wearer what they need so that the shoe delivers a decent grip and can transition smoothly between both trails and roads with ease. The shoe is made specifically from an AT tread material; this material is known for being long-lived and it’s overall rugged look. The use of the material overall allows the shoe to really achieve a level of grip that is decent; the need for the shoe to switch between terrains required the shoe to have a somewhat reduced level of grip which is achieved. The pattern on the outsole of the shoe itself is one that differs greatly in length and is fashioned from hexagonal shapes; this is one of the special characteristics of New Balance shoes and keeps the shoe from being too dense or too flexible.

Midsole

Well, the name of the shoe signals to us what it will have in it’s midsole. Adidas has their boost. Nike has their Lunarlon. New Balance has their Fresh Foam material; in all honesty, their material allows the shoe to really function and provide the wearer with what they need in terms of responsiveness. Fresh foam is known for being a bit on the springy side and for not really giving the wearer that highly cushioned feel that is normal for shoes of this design. If a pillow-like feel is what you’re looking for in a shoe, then this shoe may not be completely for you. The midsole on the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 is also 3-d printed; the fresh foam is layered so as to provide the wearer with a stable ride and really does it’s best to give the wearer a natural feeling ride while in use.

Upper

Okay, so the upper of the Fresh Foam Gobi is designed from a technology of New Balance’s own design that allows the shoe to give the wearer that feeling that their foot is completely protected while in the shoe. The Fantom Fit upper on the shoe is seamless and works to give the foot the level of comfort that it will need while in use; the fact that the material in the shoe is placed together in a seamless way allows it to really prevent friction and keep the foot of the wearer comfortable, even when not in socks. The Bootie design of the upper of the shoe also keeps the wearer’s foot from moving around, or in other words, increases the snug fit provided to the wearer. Okay, last but not least there is the addition of the Toe protector into the design of the upper on this shoe; the toe protector is made from a layer of rubber that works to keep objects from entering into the wearer’s shoe.

Weight

Okay, well the shoe isn’t the most lightweight, but, the versatility that it provides allows the wearer to really do what they need to do in order to function effectively. Before anything else is said, the shoe weighs roughly about 9 oz; again, this is definitely bad considering the versatility that the shoe provides to the wearer of the shoe. The upper of the shoe is relatively porous, something that contributes to the lightweight effect achieved by the design of the shoe. The weight of the shoe allows it to really give the wearer what they need during the longer runs and also works to give the wearer a bit of help when wearing the shoe for the more speed reliant activities.

Breathability

The material used for the upper of the shoe really doesn’t allow the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 to be very breathable. The upper of the shoe is designed from a Fantom Fit material; this material is somewhat thick and doesn’t allow much air to enter into it’s design. The thick cut of the material on the upper allows the shoe to be durable and allows the shoe to provide the wearer with what they need in terms of functionality; the thick nature keeps materials from entering into the design and allows the shoe to continually provide for the wearer’s needs.

Comfort

The upper of this shoe is one that allows the shoe to be extremely functional and continually allows the wearer to do what they need to in terms of provide for the curves of their feet. The design of the upper of this shoe allows the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 to provide for the wearer’s foot in terms of the cushioning that it provides and it’s ability to conform to the shape of the wearer’s foot. The sole unit of the shoe may not be comfortable initially, primarily because of the midsole’s need to be broken in during use; it doesn’t require an extremely long time but it does need to be broken in. The sock liner in the upper of the shoe really enables it to be somewhat moisture wicking which adds to the comfort provided by the shoe to the wearer.

Style

In terms of style, the cut of the shoe allows it to b somewhat aesthetically appealing; the shoe has a thin cut that simply blends in flawlessly with the style of most shoes nowadays. Something else to keep in mind about the upper of the shoe is that it provides the wearer with what they need in terms of variety; the shoe comes in a variety of colors and so can be paired with several different outfits. For all intents and purposes, this shoe can be considered a cross training shoe; it can be used on both trails and roads meaning, which is just something to keep in mind when considering the purchase of a shoe for these reasons. The midsole of the shoe has hexagonal patterning that allows it to have varying levels of firmness in place throughout and to be extremely comfortable while in use.

Durability

This shoe needs to be rather durable in order for it to be able to really function as a trail shoe at all. The fresh foam in the sole unit of the shoe can really retain it’s level of responsiveness and, although it has a decent level of cushion once broken manages to retain it’s responsiveness for an extremely long level of time. The upper of the shoe is layered and manages to prevent rips from becoming present in it’s design; the form-fitting material in the upper of the shoe doesn’t really break down after ripping. The fact that the midsole on the shoe has a 3D printed layered design also adds to the shoe’s overall ability to provide for the curves of the foot.

Protection

In terms of protection, the upper of the shoe in tandem with the cushioning in the sole unit allows the shoe to really provide for all of the curves of the foot. The Fresh Foam cushioning in the sole unit allows the shoe to really provide for all of the curves in the wearer’s foot; the fact that it provides for the curves in the wearer’s foot and the overall level of thickness that is present in this section of the shoe enables it to really provide the wearer with a decent level of protection in that materials have a rather hard time entering into the design of the shoe. The upper of the shoe is overall extremely thick and gives the wearer what they need in terms of protection as well; the thickness of the upper and the addition of the sock liner into it’s design also works to allow the shoe to have a decent level of protection while in use.

Responsiveness

The Fresh Foam make of the midsole must be rather responsive, it’s Fresh Foam. The layering of the midsole on the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 allows it to conform to the shape of the wearer’s foot and doesn’t vary much among the terrain types that it is done on. The cushioning provided by the upper of the shoe also works to give the wearer a bit of responsiveness in that the shoe can move rather easily and gives the wearer a bit of cushioning in that the shoe continuously conforms to the shape of the wearer’s foot and allows them to do what they need while the shoe is in use.

Support

The sole unit of the shoe works to give the wearer what they need in terms of cushioning; the midsole and the fresh foam material, once it’s broken in, gives the wearer what they need so that the shoe conforms to the shape and size of their foot. The support that stems from this design allows the shoe to be exceptionally comfortable and ensures that the wearer has what they need in terms of comfort when running for exceptionally long periods of time. The upper of the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 is rather snug due to the layered design and gives the wearer what they need in terms of support for the sides of their feet; this becomes doubly important when the shoe is used for extended periods of time and the dexterity of the material gains in importance.

Terrain

Okay, here comes the fun part of the design of the Fresh Foam Gobi v2; the shoe us versatile in it’s uses meaning that it can be worn on both trails and road terrains. The sole unit of the shoe is rather durable and can handle a decent level of activity due to the material that was used in it’s design. Before anything else is mentioned about the design of the upper of the shoe, the sole unit and the functionality that has been given to the shoe by the New Balance for the use of it on various terrain types must be mentioned; the upper of the shoe, much like the sole unit of the shoe is layered and can handle a decent level of activity while in use. The thickness of the upper and the functionality that is achieved from this feature in the design allows the wearer to do what they need to in terms of activity in the shoe and allow the shoe to move while in use. Something to keep in mind about the sole unit of the shoe and the grip achieved on trails is that the shoe provides the wearer with what they need in terms of grip, but not on the more technical trails; this just means that the shoe will not provide the wearer with much grip or range of movement when used on trails that have a bit more features.

Price

Another good thing about the design of this shoe is that it isn’t the most expensive shoe. The Fresh Foam Gobi v2 doesn’t hurt the wearer’s pockets whatsoever despite the fact that it is so versatile; the relatively low price of the shoe allows it to have a decent level of value due to the fact that the shoe can be used on both trails and roads. The fact that the shoe doesn’t have very much grip (not as much as the norm at least) doesn’t really hurt the shoe at all, out is just one of the good explanations as to why the shoe is priced at the level that it is priced at. Other than that, the shoe provides the wearer with what they need in terms of functionality.

Traction

The grip provided by the sole unit of the shoe is honestly about average. To give the shoe the ability to be worn on various terrains, the shoe has a sole unit that is designed from an AT tread material; the use of this material allows the shoe to move is one of the reasons why the shoe moves and provides for the wearer’s foot. That isn’t to say that the shoe doesn’t have a nice level of grip, rather than the grip just keeps the shoe in line for use on both terrains while not giving it a major advantage on either terrain; this was purposely done by the shoe to give the wearer what they need while in use.

Flexibility

The upper of the shoe does what the wearer needs to give one what they need while the shoe is in use. The funny thing about the upper of the shoe is that it is extremely flexible despite the thickness of the upper of the shoe in general. The sole unit of the shoe works to give the shoe what it needs in terms of functionality; the sole unit and it’s multilayered midsole allows the shoe to move to the need of the wearer’s foot. For a shoe to move on trails, even a little bit, it must have a decent level of flex and be able to dig into the surface that it is being used on.

Stability

The design of the shoe as a whole allows the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 to provide the wearer with a decent level of stability. The upper of the shoe is thick; the thickness of the design of the upper of the Fresh Foam Gobi v2 allows it to imbue the wearer with a sense of security and keeps the foot of the wearer’s foot from moving to the will of the wearer’s foot. The multi-layered design of the midsole keeps the shoe from experiencing excess movement and allows the wearer to do what they need to do while in use.

Drop

Everything about the design of the shoe is honestly “average”, even the drop. The design of the sole unit of the shoe allows the shoe to really provide the wearer with a decent level of transition due to the 6mm drop that is incorporated into the design allows the wearer to really function at the level that the wearer needs it to.

Key features

• AT tread outsole
• Fresh foam midsole
• Fantom Fit upper
• Toe protector incorporated into the design

Verdict

To be completely honest, the design of the shoe allows the wearer to do what they need to in order to provide them with an incredibly high level of functionality; to the same effect, the shoe is also incredibly average in several respects. Something also allows the shoe to provide the wearer with what they need in terms of functionality; a shoe that can really function on a trail and a road shoe is a rather rare thing to find, to be honest. Also to that effect is the fact that the shoe is rather inexpensive and won’t really damage the wearer’s pockets whatsoever, which is something to keep in mind.
