Outsole

The outsole of the Puma Ignite EvoKnit is designed to provide both a high level of traction and flexibility to the wearer of the shoe. The sole unit is designed from a combination of Puma’s Ever track rubber and blown rubber, which allows the shoe to have an extremely high level of traction as well. The grooves of the outsole of the shoe are a combination of both horizontal and vertical grooves that, as mentioned above, allow the shoe to bend relatively easily. Altogether the outsole of the shoe is somewhat of the powerhouse regarding the feel provided by the shoe.

Midsole

The midsole of the Puma Ignite EvoKnit, as the name insinuates, is designed from Puma’s Ignite foam. This material, unlike a plain EVA foam midsole, finds a balance in-between both responsiveness and firmness. The foam lines the length of the shoe; another plus for those seeking cushioning for various portions of their foot. One thing that can be said about the foam is that it is somewhat stiff, a feature that is repaired by the flex in the outsole of the shoe.

Upper

As the name of the shoe suggests, the upper of the Puma Ignite EvoKnit is designed from Puma’s EvoKnit material. The Evoknit in the upper of the shoe also plays its part in providing the shoe with a high level of flexibility during use. The fit of the upper stems from Puma’s use of the ankle extension in the design and the material itself. To provide the wearer with a sense of stability, the shoe features a heel loop on the backside of the shoe. The lacing on the shoe is somewhat simple despite the design of the rest of the shoe. Overall, the upper is somewhat aesthetically appealing and can handle a high level of stress.

Weight

Despite the mesh upper and the foam make of the sole unit, the Puma Ignite EvoKnit is still a relatively heavy shoe. The shoe weighs in at a surprising 11.9 oz, mainly because of the variety of overlays present on the shoe. Despite this, the shoe still delivers a natural feel while in use because of the foam used and the snug fit of the upper of the shoe.

Breathability

The mesh make of the upper of the shoe unlike most shoe’s that use this material, doesn’t allow for much airflow during use. The Evoknit material is relatively dense, a feature that stops the air from flowing naturally into the sneaker. The fact that the material fits the wearer’s foot rather snugly also doesn’t do much to help in this regard. The dense nature of the material helps in certain cases, such as when the shoe is being worn for in colder weather. Just bear in mind that this shoe doesn’t offer a very high level of breathability in certain cases.

Comfort

One thing that Puma did very well was use a variety of materials that would allow the shoe to be very comfortable for those who were wearing it. The sole unit of the shoe features Puma’s Ignite foam; the foam is very responsive and conforms to the shape of the wearer’s foot rather easily. This allows the shoe to provide a very high level of support to the wearer’s arches and curves. The upper of the shoe is sock-like and designed from puma’s Evoknit material which allows the shoe to provide a snug fit during their wear. The extension on the upper also restricts the shoe from moving around constantly while being worn, which also increases the shoe’s comfort levels.

Style

Now, the shoe is rather stylish as well. It comes in a variety of attractive colorways and the upper of the shoe has distinct patterning to it which only improves the aesthetics of the shoe. The heel strap of the shoe is somewhat gaudy but, can be overlooked; it depends on who is wearing the shoe. The sole unit of the shoe is color blocked which allows the shoe to be worn by a variety of people and prevents the shoe from looking overly vibrant on foot. Now the actual cutoff the shoe is somewhat simplistic. It has very few overlays which allow the shoe to appear minimalistic. The Puma insignia on the sock extension of the upper somewhat takes away from the simple appearance of the shoe but depending on what is worn with the shoes, not by much.

Durability

One thing that can be said about these shoes is that they are extremely durable. The Evoknit material that is used in the design of the upper is relatively dense, unlike other mesh materials and can withstand various objects that can impact the design of the shoe. The sole unit of the shoe is relatively thick as well which allows the shoe to last for a relatively long time without needing replacement. The sole unit of the shoe has a rubber outsole unit that allows the material to keep up relatively well on very surfaces; coupled with the patterning of the outsole allows the shoe to hold up very well. The material in the midsole of the shoe, the ignite foam, also keeps its responsive nature and bounce for the duration of the shoe’s life as well.

Protection

The firm design of the upper of the shoe allows the shoe to provide a high level of protection to the wearer of the shoe during use. As mentioned the Puma Ignite EvoKnit provides the wearer with a decent level protection during use. The material itself prevents the shoe from allowing various objects from damaging the wearer's foot, even without the variety of overlays throughout. The dense design of the material in the upper of the shoe also allows it to keep the wearer’s foot from getting wet in the damper areas. The sole unit of the shoe provides the wearer with a high level of protection as well because of the thick cut that it has. The design of the material is one that allows the shoe to work in a somewhat similar manner as the upper of the shoe.

Responsiveness

The ignite foam in the midsole of the shoe allows it to retain its high level of responsiveness during use. The ignite foam is firm while not taking away form the cushion that a foam of its nature should have. The material itself conforms to the shape of the wearer ‘s foot and does so with relative ease. The heel unit has an extra amount of cushioning placed throughout which improves the natural feel that the material provides to the wearer of the shoe. The upper, acting in very much the same manner as the midsole, provides the wearer with a decent amount of responsiveness due to the snug fit that it provides. The heel strap placed on the shoe also works to this effect by adding to the snug fit of the shoe and allowing it to have an enhanced reaction time during use.

Support

The dense mesh on the upper of the Puma Ignite EvoKnit allows the shoe to provide the wearer with a snug fit during use. The snug fit that the shoe provides gives the shoe the ability to provide support to the outer curves of the wearer’s foot. The heel strap of the shoe in tandem with the ignite foam on the midsole of the shoe allows it to provide a substantial amount of support to the heel of the wearer’s foot. Overall, the Puma Ignite EvoKnit provides for all runners who are in need of a shoe that provides support for those with neutral curves on their feet.

Terrain

Now, the Puma Ignite EvoKnit is extremely versatile in the types of terrains that it can be used on. The Ever track rubber and the patterning that it has been given allows the shoe to be used in developed areas such as tracks, roads, etc. This versatility would make the shoe an amazing CrossFit runner if it weren’t for the shoe’s utterly heavy design. With that in mind, the shoe still functions very well and could be considered for those who need an all-around shoe to wear. Just keep in mind that the material that makes up the outsole of the shoe wouldn’t last very well on the more rural terrains such as trails because the material would degrade rather quickly.

Price

The Puma Ignite EvoKnit can be found at a substantially lower price than it would’ve been at its initial release date. When first released, the shoe was relatively expensive mainly because of the durable design of the shoe and the technologies that are incorporated into it allow for the shoe to provide the relatively comfortable and versatile feel of the shoe. If you’re considering a shoe with a high level of value that can be worn in a variety of terrains, the Puma Ignite EvoKnit would be a great choice.

Traction

The Puma Ignite EvoKnit achieves a very high level of grip on a variety of terrains. The combination of Ever track and Blown rubber on the outsole of the shoe allows for a high level of traction on the more developed terrains; this coupled with the tread patterning on the outsole of the shoe allows the shoe to achieve an even greater level of grip. The ease of movement that is found throughout the shoe design allows the wearer of the shoe to achieve amazing footing, better improving the shoe’s traction.

Flexibility

The foam in the midsole of the shoe allows for a very high range of motion during use. The Ignite foam in the midsole, while being relatively firm can move very easily, allowing the shoe to move very easily. The upper of the shoe, being designed from a dense mesh, still achieves a very high-level flexibility because of the nature of the material. The lack of overlays of the upper of the shoe also helps in this regard, since there is very little on the upper of the shoe that can restrict the movement of the wearer’s foot.

Stability

The dense nature of the mesh on the upper of the Puma Ignite EvoKnit provides the wearer with a decent level of stability during use. The design of the upper, despite the mesh used throughout, allows the shoe to provide the wearer with a snug fit resulting in a sense of security; the sock-like extension on the upper also works to this effect, restricting movement and allowing for precise foot placement. The sole unit of the shoe is relatively thick and achieves a balance between both firmness and cushioning. The firm aspect of the midsole prevents rollover while the shoe is being worn also aiding in providing the wearer with a sense of security in their movements.

Drop

The drop on the Puma Ignite EvoKnit is relatively high due to the excess foam laced in the heel of the shoe. The heel-to-toe ratio on the shoe is about 12mm, which is slightly higher than the average. The higher drop does very little to take away from the feel given by the shoe due to the flexible design of the shoe; it still feels extremely natural to run in these shoes.

Notable features

• Evoknit upper
• Ignite foam midsole
• Ever track and blown rubber outsole
• Heel strap

Verdict

Overall, when all aspects of the shoe are considered, it’s quite the steal. The shoe features various technologies that allow it to provide the wearer with an extremely comfortable and somewhat natural-feeling ride. The shoe is relatively inexpensive and is attractive in its own retro-looking way.
